Checked the menu last night, and it now says their hours are 10 AM - 6 AM.

Still, I don't know how reliable this is, because I called once around 3 AM on a Saturday morning and was told they were about to close.

I have definitely eaten at San Soo Gab San at 3:30 am on a weeknight after leaving the bars. It was delicious and we were able to keep drinking. There were like 4 other tables of people at the restaurant, so maybe they close if there are not enough customers

    Hi,

I once arrived at San Soo Gab San just after 5 am. I was advised they close between 5 am and 10 am.

We went to another Korean restaurant on Lawrence for breakfast. The hostess was smoking a cigarette and vaccuuming while listening to the 12 days of Christmas. It was May, not December. This alternative Korean is no longer open.

Hi all! The spreadsheet is finally up. Please tell me if there are any errors, especially in neighborhood, cuisine type, etc. I just checked all these places for their hours, so I believe this is accurate.

Please keep sending me updates and I'll enter them! Thanks!

I'm pretty sure IHOPs are open 24 hours, and if so probably belong on the list. There's one at Diversey and California and another on Grace off of Halsted, and probably others.

(People here are on both sides of the issue as to whether IHOP's food is edible, but edibility doesn't seem to be a pre-qualification for the list, just hours. I happen to think their food is good enough in a pinch if you avoid the flavored syrups.)

Also, I think the Golden Nugget at the three way of Diversey/Western/Elston is 24 hours. Maybe the ones on Clark south of Diversey and LIncoln up near Montrose are, also.

Edited to add: Never mind! I scrolled further down your list and saw you have all these listed in a grouping under "Major Chains." But maybe their listings, with addresses and phone numbers, belong in the list proper. Not that I'm going to do the work to do that, mind you. :)

I thought I'd do that until I realized there's an IHOP in nearly every major suburb in Chicago and at least half a dozen in the city, and there's quite a few Nuggetses as well, so I thought, fuck it, if there's more than four locations folks can call 411.

Don't go dissin' the flavored syrups. Have you tried the butter pecan?

Pie Lady, I notice your list includes "late night," not just 24 hours. That being the case, you're missing several places in Chinatown, Smith & Wollensky and Quartino. If midnight is late enough, several places in Greektown also qualify, and I think both the gyros joints are 24 hours.

El Norte, at 5600 N Ridge Ave (the intersection of Ridge/Broadway/Bryn Mawr) is 24 hours on Friday and Saturday and open 7am-2am the rest of the week.

Here are two I'm sure of.

    Artopolis

    Cafe Hours
    Monday - Thursday 9 am - 12 am
Friday and Saturday 9 am - 1 am
    Sunday 10 am - 11 pm
Serving Coffees, Desserts, Breads and Artopitas.

    Kitchen Hours
    Sunday - Thursday 11 am - 11 pm
Friday and Saturday 11 am - 12 am
    Serving Full Menu

    Greek Islands
    SUN-THUR 11AM-MID
    FRI-SAT 11AM-1AM

I haven't checked lately, but several others in Greektown were open at least till midnight, too, and Mr. Greek and Greektown Gyros used to be 24 hours.

There are at least half a dozen late-night places in Chinatown, I believe, perhaps more.

Don't forget the bars and nightclubs with late-night kitchens. Rocky Vander's in Prospect Heights serves a full menu till late. I love their wings.

Do you want carry out joints? Mug's Pizza (three locations) serves till 4 a.m. and delivers almost as late.

Back in my salad (or should I say katchumber) days living in West Ridge, two favorite late night stops were:

    1)

    Lahore Food & Grill
    2114-2116 W Devon Ave
    Chicago, IL 60659

Get the spicy chicken naan sandwich - unbeatable.

    -And-

    2)

    Hyderabad House
    2225 W Devon Ave
    Chicago, IL 60659

    Biryani and goat curry please.

Both are open 24 (or nearly 24) hours and offer some awesome grub.

I didn't study your current list in detail but noticed a few errors. Hub 51 isn't in the Loop and Huck Finn isn't in Chinatown. Clarke's is vegetarian?

Pie Lady wrote:I'm taking anything that serves at or after midnight, so if you can remember the names of the Chinatown and Greektown places, I'll add those as well as the others in your list.

Including places open only to midnight increases the number of restaurants considerably. Making a reasonably complete list for city and suburbs seems like quite an ambitious undertaking.

About a year ago I posted a list in the Late Night Chinatown thread. I wasn't aiming to be complete, only trying to show how much trouble one can get into by relying on Metromix. In the last year some new late places have opened while others have probably closed or changed hours.

In addition to the pizzerias mentioned above, Metro and Pie-Eyed are open late*. Also Piece, Santullo's and Gigio's (at least on weekends). I'd be surprised if there weren't dozens more.

Baba's, Pakiza, Flaming Wok n Grill and a couple other "cabbie joints" in that area ought to be included as well as the similar spots on and around Devon (two were mentioned earlier in this thread). Don't forget the new Turkish place.

Barbecue? Uncle John's, Barbara Ann's and Lem's are the best of the bunch but many of the other southside barbecue houses also keep late hours.

For hot dogs, add Jim's and Express Grill, a pair of ancient always-open stands. Both of these Maxwell Street institutions have second newer locations. And don't forget Bridgeport's Maxwell Street Depot. Lots (dozens?) of newer "Maxwell style" stands are scattered around the south side (eg, 79th & Stony and 53rd & Western) and many are open 24 hours or at least very late. Chicago's most (in)famous late night eatery is probably Wieners Circle.

I see you include Taco Burrito King but what about the slew of imitators with deceptively similar names? Some are open late, some aren't. Famous Taco Burrito King on Irving, Taco Burrito Express in Wicker Park and Taco & Burrito House on Broadway are a few that probably are. I think these three may have other locations or those may actually be distinct businesses. Very confusing.

Venturing a bit beyond the burrito, but still featuring plenty of drunk gringos and gringettes, there's Arturo's (next to Lazo's) and of course the trio of Pasaditas. Also Veloz.

Other late Mexican places include Birria Huentitan, the 2 Raymond's (home of the cheesy taco) and the Atotonilcos (the La Villita original is open around the clock on weekends). A hot dog con tocino from Delicias Mexicanas is always a treat after the bars close.

For depressing 24 hour diners don't forget D&L on the north side and Don's Grill (formerly Don's Humburgers) on the south. Speaking of southside 24 hour places, there are the 2 Kevin's Hamburger Heavens as well as his son's new HH Express. One of the Kevin's is directly across the street from Dox, also open 24.

There's a string of late night places on Division: Five Faces and the pizzeria across the street, Mr Gyros (was Mr Gyros & Mrs Pizza before the unfortunate divorce) and Sammy's. I'm not saying I recommend any of the places I mention.

A handful of more upscale restaurants serve to midnight and beyond. In addition to those already mentioned, Maude's, Bijan's and Bedford come to mind.

As LAZ pointed out there are lots of bars that serve food late. I don't know how you'd go about finding out which they are. Miller's in the Loop is a well-known one.

The list really needs a chili parlor. I think the original Lindy's may be the only candidate (open to midnight, weekends only?).

Compiling a list is only the beginning. For it to remain useful, regular checking and updating is important. It's great someone is willing to take on a project like this. Good luck.

    * I didn't do a whole lot of fact checking so this post is almost certain to contain multiple errors.

Clarke's may not be vegetarian but they have a lot of things that qualify, but it's misleading. I'll fix that and the other locations.

The list is for places serving midnight and later.
