Frequently asked questions about the Jewish X-Mas Eve dinner, cribbed from 2008's FAQ (which was cribbed from 2007, etc etc)

    Why is it labeled "Jewish"?
Because many Jews in the US traditionally go out for Chinese food on Christmas.

It's not kosher, is it? It's just not Chinese for Christmas in my book unless there's lots of tasty trayf
No, it's not Kosher, but not to worry -- it's per-table ordering, and anyone who wants dishes sans meat and shellfish can order as they wish.

So, why is this dinner on Christmas Eve?
The year that we started this, Chanukah and Christmas were synchronized so Michael, who founded it was spending Christmas night celebrating Chanukah with his family. He moved the Chinese food dinner a night earlier that year and we've all come to like the idea. And now it is tradition, and we must do it.

Do I have to be Jewish to attend?
No, but you should be comfortable sitting next to someone who is Jewish. (Frankly, that's good advice for any LTHForum event) Full disclosure: I [Leek] was brought up Jewish, but while I still have strong family and cultural ties, I have no more religious leanings than, say, my dogs.

    How is ordering handled?
We usually break up into ad-hoc tables of 10. Each table is responsible for its own ordering and its own bill. If the group agrees, at Sun Wah we could pre-order a duck or two for each table, or a whole pig, or something like that. Sun Wah allows BYOB but also has a drinks menu.

    Are children welcome?
    Of course.

    What about parking?
Street parking is reasonably available nearby. You might have to walk a block, or cross Broadway.

I'm happy to help organize, seeing as we usually show up with at least 5, sometimes as many as 9 (count JoelF+4 for now).
If Sun Wah seems too played out, how about Lao Hunan?

My main concern is that the room we are assigned be handicap accessible. So as long as it's on the first floor, ok. But if it's upstairs, then no. And the restaurant itself may be accessible, but the banquet room may not be - see Lao Szechuan. Do not believe them when they say there is an elevator, it does not run in the evenings.

    Hi,

As much as I enjoy this tradition, I won't be attending this year.

The Moms and I will be doing Wigilia, the Polish Christmas Eve feast. I'll be thinking of everyone we celebrate.

(If it falls apart, I'll be back on the list in a flash.)

If it's at Sun Wah, please count in me and Mama happy_stomach. There's a chance Nephew happy_stomach will be born around then. If he does arrive, then we'll have to skip dinner. Is a last-minute answer OK?

Confirmed, we have 3 tables of 10 at Sun Wah. It is a Saturday this year, so they are limiting the reservations they are taking, as their Saturday's tend to be crazy.

Do we want to order 2 peking ducks per table?

Edited to correct Friday to Saturday

Add me please! Sun Wah is a perfect choice and last year was such fun!

Duck - 2 per table sounds smart. When I brought the neighborhood crew, we had 9 and 2 ducks were ideal (some leftovers even) as we all had a good share but also room to order some other gems.

Let me know if I can help in any way.

Except for the Ducks, each table will order their own items. I honestly don't know if it's vegetarian enough for you particularly, but you can look at the menu and make that determination - http://sunwahbbq.com/menu.html

Sun Wah does a good job with vegetarian dishes ... We've had wonderful ones at each visit in addition to our duck, etc. In fact, I think the cabbage dish everyone flipped over at the GNR awards was vegetarian. It needs to be preordered but I but you might call and ask about it? Does anyone remember the name of that?

We also did them for my birthday. It was such a,"why didn't I think of that dish" and it was so frakkin' good.

Is there a minimum that needs to be preordered? If so, how do I do that for a group outing like ours?

So, I will ask when I confirm our reservation later this week. We are not a group, per se. We are 3 separate tables of 10 - obvs if we are fewer than 30, we'll divide differently. They don't do groups larger than 20 on Fri or Sat, but were reluctantly talked into allowing us to reserve since we are ordering per table. Should I ask about an order of cabbage rolls for each table?
