    I am seriously missing Kaufman's.
Can anyone please tell me where they get their CB fix in their absence.
I keep trying other outlets, and nothing comes close.

    Thanks, and Happy Holidays!

Steve's Deli in River North is my go-to place, including for deli sandwiches like corned beef and pastrami. There are some things that Steve's does even better than Kaufman's, such as their beef-stuffed cabbage, chicken pot pie, and knishes. Steve's uses a Detroit-deli-style rye bread, which is different from Kaufman's New-York-style rye bread; both are excellent. The New York style features lots and lots of caraway seeds; the Detroit style doesn't, and benefits from a quick re-heating before serving.

If you're driving to Steve's, they validate for free parking in the lot behind the store (the lot for Petco). Also, they sometimes have coupons on their website, and they send out coupons if you sign up for their e-mails through their website.

There are a couple of items I get elsewhere. The bagels at Steve's are nothing special, and New York Bagel and Bialy is as good a place as any for bagels while Kaufman's is closed. Also, Steve's doesn't have the smoked fish selection that Kaufman's does; even before the fire, I've been getting kippured salmon at Fox & Obel (where it's just as good as Kaufman's, and cheaper too).

    Jill,

It might help if you let us know the places you've tried that weren't up to snuff.

If you are Skokie based, you can go to the New York Bagel and Bialy on Touhy (just east of Skokie Blvd at 4714 W Touhy Ave) and if you are lucky, you can get some corned beef sent up from Manny's on Roosevelt Road, which is much better than Kaufman's in my book.

If you are based north of Skokie, I'd suggest Max's Deli ( 191 Skokie Valley Road Highland Park, IL ), which is also better than Kaufman's.

And if you are Indianapolis based, or insane about corned beef (and I admit to having driven to Indianapolis at least once just to eat at this place), go to Shapiro's at 808 S. Meridian.

No fans of AP deli? I was sad when the south loop location closed down many years ago. Total hole in the wall but worth a south side trip for me.
I'm not picky, I just have more tastebuds than you... ; )

Well, I am in the north suburbs, and I did not want to be negative in naming other places I have tried the corned beef and been disappointed. Just because it was not what I was looking for, does not mean they should receive any negative comments publicly. I was just seeing if there were any people like myself who is craving and missing the CB at K's.

I've always enjoyed the corned beef at Original Bagel & Bialy in Buffalo Grove. Great bagels too.

Well, it's a bit of a drive, but McBob's on North avenue in Milwaukee has some of the best corned beef I've ever had

If you really crave a Jewish-deli corned beef fix, you might want to work your way over to Fumare at the French Market where the pastrami actually begins life as a corned beef. The final product lacks the usual over-the-top spiciness of many pastramis, but rather tastes more like a corned beef that's raised its game to a higher level. But whatever you call it, it's definitely worth a detour for anyone fond of the Eastern European version of smoked meat:

"The fork with two prongs is in use in northern Europe. In England, they’re armed with a steel trident, a fork with three prongs. In France we have a fork with four prongs; it’s the height of civilization." Eugene Briffault (1846)

I've heard lots of people sing the praises of the meats at Romanian Kosher Sausage at Touhy and Clark in Rogers Park, but I've never been there...

I have been and it is EXCELLENT - their Corned Beef is top notch not mention their other deli meats - you will not go wrong with their pastrami and salami as well as their hot dogs - the best in the city.

Being kosher they will close early on Friday Afternoon and will be closed all day Saturday

If you do go to the Romanian, go on a Thursday and get their special Shabbat potato salad. It is by far the best potato salad I have ever tasted. I don't know what makes it so good, but I can easily eat a whole container of the stuff by myself (and I'm not even a big potato salad fan). It is usually sold out by Friday morning. Truthfully, as much as I like their sausages (especially the spicy polish dogs and medium hard salami), I have had more flavorful corned beef. Still, it is pretty good (very lean), and I think it compares favorably with Kaufman's.

BTW: They are now open on Sunday AM.

There was a time that I was a big fan of AP. However, inconsistency really made it a place that I just drive past now (North Ave).

Their Garlic hot dogs are the best.

Best chopped liver in Chicago, too. Surprised nsxtasy hasn't been to this long-standing institution.
