Recently my father was gifted with a package of assorted M. eastern sweets by a colleague, really remarkable sweets. each one much better than I've had anywhere in the US (including those I've had from the various communities in the Detroit area) the package indicated they were from zalatimo's.
In poking around on the internet, I found 2 different web sites (
www.zalatimo.com and
www.zalatimosweets.com) with two different bases of operations (jerusalem vs. amman) but one creation story. I'd be interested if anyone knows more about the the store and its history - family split, franchise? Fwiw, the ones I had I think came from Amman.
The superiority of the sweets to what I've had domestically got me to thinking of the differences in sweets I've had in India, or here but purchased from top places in delhi (most recently from haldiram's main delhi branch) which are far far superior, more subtle and nuanced than what is produced locally, which for the morst part are for some reason (and I don't have an explanation) almost a caricature of the hgher quality Indian sweets I've had, picking up a few characteristics (notably intense sweetness) and taking it over the top
