I am Will's sister, Sally, and I live in NC. Thank you all so much for your very kind comments regarding my brother. He loved Chicago and the food there with a passion. It makes things a little easier knowing the kinds of friends he had on this forum. When we get back and settled, I am going to make a print this thread and the one regarding his weight loss to give to my mom. She will really enjoy reading all of your comments.

    Sally:

My deepest condolences to you and your family. Will died far, far too young.

Will truly was one of a kind and will always have a special place in my heart. He was a former boss of mine, yet still an amazing friend and mentor to this day. I really enjoyed reading this thread and how he touched the lives of so many with his excellent foodie skills; which I'm happy to say I was fortunate to experience. The Holiday party I attended at his house in December was a true testament of his awesome cooking! Sally, my deepest condolences. Your brother was an amazing man and will be greatly missed.

My condolences to you and your family Sally. Although I never met Will, I felt like I knew him from his terrific stories and great knowledge about southern food. I also admired the hard battle he fought the last several years, one that so many have to fight. He was obviously a tremendous inspiration to so many and will be missed!

"In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Inspiration Corporation 4554 N. Broadway Suite 207 Chicago, IL 60640. Will served as a member of the Board of Directors for this organization that trains people for successful culinary employment."

This seems like such an appropriate way of honoring Will. Thanks, Sally, for providing the link.

I didn't know Philpot as well as many of you, but my boyfriend worked with him for years & I had the pleasure of attending a few of his parties, which were always a great night. Ever the charming host, he'd make you your first drink, and after that 'you could make your own'. He was a great, smiling, funny guy & he'll be missed by many. We'd trade stories about living in NY & he'd call me the "Long Island Terror", which always resulted in an exchange that amused the people around. It's a sad night around our place. If there is a local memorial lunch/dinner/gathering, please let me know, as we'd love to be a part of it, and have other friends of his to share stories & laugh with.

Sally, our deepest sympathies for you & your family.

    Hi,

For those who would like to break bread and remember Will with his family and friends, there is a dinner at Feed on Monday evening. Details can be found here.

I always enjoyed talking to Will, he was quite the conversationalist. The one post I always admired was this:

Subject: The 22nd Annual Big Apple Barbecue Block Party

YourPalWill wrote:Be sure to try Ed Mitchell's. he does an outrageously good eatern NC whole style Hog.

Some of you know that I work for a bank handling troubled loans. About ten years ago, i was doing the same for a bank down in North Carolina and ed was one of the customers that I was working with. At the time, he had a really small operation and was having trouble paying us.

The word came down that I had to do the evil deed: hop on an airplane and go shut Ed down because he couln't pay. I arrived on the little US Air puddle jumper one afternoon and went to meet with Ed. During the course of our dour meeting, he offered me lunch from his steam table.

After sampling that Marvelous Que, I promptly returned to Charlotte, reported to my boss that there was nothing of substance there to liquidate, so we took a write off.

Ed and his marvelous que stayed in business for many years. He's become a bit of an institution over the past five years and is recongized as one of NC's best barbequers of whole hog.

I guess that's the day i really figured out that I was a real chowhound.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

Will and I discussed that story a couple times. I always enjoyed those conversations. I wish I could make it Monday night.

I'm making a huge pot of YouPalWill's Superbowl chili today.
I deviate a bit here and there but it's his recipe and I've made it a number of times and it really is a winner.
I'll be thinking of Will all week, bowl after bowl.
