If am I trying to make a kid-friendly black forest cake, can I substitute some of the kirsch with apple cider? I am thinking of making the cherry filling non-alcoholic, but am still coating the cake with syrup containing kirsch. I plan to use the Trader Joe morello cherries which come in a jar.

I'd use cherry juice instead, or cranberry. How much are you planning to replace?

I'd use the juice from the morello cherries instead of the kirsch. If it's not syrupy enough, I'd add some sugar and cook it down a bit.

I'll try this. Thanks for the advice.
