Looking for a German restaurant

Hello all.

I have my aunt and uncle coming to visit in a few weeks from Canada.
They are originally from Germany and I would like to take them some place for German food.

They have been to the Brauhaus and to Edelweiss Inn on Irving Pk.
I am looking for some place different in the city or the immediate area.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. My aunt worked at a German restaurant up in Canada. So I need a a place that has good German type fare.

I heartily third!! Not only is Laschet's my favorite German restaurant, but it's one of my tops in Chicago all around. Take it easy on those Optimators!!

how about Mirabell? My in-laws like it a lot, and they are big fans of german food. Friendly atmosphere, too.

I'd also suggest GNR WinnerLaschet's Inn on Irving. Although they recently changed ownership, they haven't slipped a bit!.

Plus, you can always go across the street to Resi's Bierstube for a potato pancake afterward!

Actually, dinner at Laschet's, followed by beer in the garden at Resi's would be an excellent evening if the weather's nice.

Thanks for the responses. Laschet's will be checked into. Maybe Mirabel's might be for another night if possible.

Don't forget the Alsatian options, such as Brasserie Jo. You'll find a wonderful Alsatian flammekuchen, as well as very good choucroute alsacienne (also known as sauerkraut with sausages), and chicken served with kneffla.

It really depends on the region of German you're looking for.

My sister is coming in from out of town this weekend and wants to bring a largeish (maybe 12-15) group to a German restaurant on Saturday evening. Bonus that it's kid friendly and has live music -- there will be 4 or 5 kids, all under 9.

She'll be based in Bartlett, so something in the suburbs would be preferable to dragging the kids and multiple cars in to the Brauhaus.

The forerunner is Edelweiss in Norridge at this point; is there someplace we're missing?

My father in law was talking about this place last weekend...he's German and says it's the best. I don't know how far Lake Zurich is from you...

Distance isn't so much an issue is that half the group doesn't want to go "into the city on a Saturday" -- I'll pass these on to my sister and let her choose!

Not sure one can go wrong w/ Laschet's.

If you go I highly recommend the Hackepeter appetizer with extra capers.
