Not a good season of this show. At least Paul won instead of the obnoxious and whiney Sara.

I mostly liked the change-ups in this season, but not the Canadian portion. (What gives with calling it Top Chef Texas when the finale is in Canada, anyway? This is the first time they've put a destination name on it, right?)

The mini-olympics stuff is the kind of crap that's good for mid-season, when a small screw-up isn't likely to knock out a season-long favorite. It didn't happen to (mind you, I think Beverly would have been equally adequate to Sara in the finals), but it's a lousy way to determine your finalists when a big part of it is skills such as marksmanship or keeping your gorge down on a moving vehicle.

I also didn't like the "you automatically qualify" quickfires of the two penultimate eps. I'm here to see cooking competition. More chefs = more entertainment.

The finale redeemed some of that: 1) a sous-chef competition was an interesting twist, although I think the field should probably have been a bit larger: leaving only three (or was it two?) people behind isn't giving a lot of chance to seek out the quality. The Restaurant Wars Redux is a nice -- and more realistic -- alternative to the usual cook-your-heart-out finale, but I'd have liked to see a bit more of the menu and theme development (like how Paul got to a meatless menu), and less of things like instructing servers and berating Tyler.

Finales have always been in a completely different location than the rest of the season, including Singapore, Puerto Rico and the Bahamas, for non continental US finales.

True, but it's always just been "Top Chef", not "Top Chef: Las Vegas" or "Top Chef: Los Angeles" right?

No, I'm pretty sure a few of the previous seasons have been similarly branded. Though I don't recall which. I think Vegas was one of them.

I'm having problems finding evidence either way for naming the sessions by location. Neither IMDB nor Wikipedia list it as anything other than just plain Top Chef.

My only real datapoint is that I had to change my DVD to record Top Chef Texas.

For what it's worth, if you go to the Bravo website, and go to each season, the banner for the season identifies the location (Top Chef - Las Vegas, etc.).

No idea how a particular cable system might identify it for DVR recording.

I thought this season was terrible and didn't watch the whole thing, but this group interview is worth the read.
