I know it's too hard to figure exact numbers since people will be coming and going, but what do you think the cost will be, say, for half a Thon? Or a quarter? Just budgeting. I've been getting a lot of tickets lately.

It's not possible to say with exactitude, but I'm guessing maybe $40-50 for the whole 24. Can't remember what it was last time (and patoriq defrayed a large part of the bill with his racetrack winnings).

Johnnie's and GnJ pretty much requires a car (or hours on public transit), so I'm losing enthusiasm for that area.

    La Chapparita would be excellent.

Just by the dint of the way certain people are gonna bob in and out, suggests that they'll be cars involved at various points. Swinging by Uncle John's and then getting to Woodlawn Tap is pretty much car dependent thing is it not?

The way I imagine things (at least), there would be 2 groups of chowathoners. A "pack" or what I will call the pelaton. And the drivers, those who can marshal the pelaton to their eating (and eat too). Over the course of the day the pelaton will have to figure out how to get around. At times they will rely on drivers, at other times they will have to rely on public transportation or taxi's. Its' really hard to figure until we firm up people who can be drivers. And like the first 24 hours of chow, the event demands a certain amount of flexibility. So, if at some point the pelaton finds itself without a driver, well, that's up to them to get by. On the other hand, when there are drivers, and there will be drivers, we should make it to places that need drivers. Drivers can also get the pack to an El stop and then book.

    Hi,

There is nothing to stop anyone from buying some Ramova Chili to eat a symbolic toast at some point.

When a place is tiny, someone orders for the group and they eat outside or el trunko. Size can be overcome. :)

I'm going to aim for lasting 5 pm to 5 am. I have wedding on Saturday, otherwise I'd do the whole thing.

Don't forget NY Bagel & Bialy is open 24 hours, I believe. Maybe for that 7 am slot? Though it is out of the way if using public transportation.

How about Big Star for a decent taco for the 1AM slot instead of Arturo's (Arturo's staff often times start breaking out the ammonia-laced mops around then while you're eating. Plus, the food sucks  Did I say that? Out loud?)?

I love all 3 of these ideas -- especially slotting in Big Star for Arturo's -- but Big Star at 1 am on a Friday Night/Saturday morning could be a real scene.

I can bring Uncle John's to the peloton at Jimmy's (if pre-cleared, since they do serve food) or Hutch Commons if you are in the vicinity between 1 and 6 PM (I'll be away from the 'thon 6-10 PM with a concert). Alternatively, Ribs 'N Bibs (which has Wiv's approval for tips) is right on the walkable parade route.

Hutch Commons would be kind of a funny place to stop for food.

It would be excellent, as suggested, if we could group a few eating places at each train stop.

I've been bugging my wife with Chowaton chat. One thing that's come up is what a horrible lull we hit around 4 AM last time. We had gotten all we could outta Waveland Bowl (even an opinion on their bottled water from ReneG), had brain's on the horizon, but could not stomach anything in between. So, I'm especially eager to hear ideas and insights for the darkest of hours.

    HI,

At the darkest hour, go the Jim's Original Polish and Maxwell St. Express for side-by-side
    Polish and bone-in pork sandwiches.

I am considering jumping in after traffic dies Friday evening until perhaps 5 am. I then have to go home, get cleaned up and head back for the Anne Willan talk at the Chicago History Museum.

Some other potential a-thon ideas, reinforcement of great ideas I've heard so far, and one potential itinerary that more or less follows a logical trajectory around town...

    12:00 Manny's
13:00 Italian Superior Bakery - Friday lunch specials or Sicilian slices
    14:00 La Chapparita -
    15:00 Mangia Fresca
    16:00 Maria's - As it opens
17:00 Pleasant House - Fish Fry as it opens
    18:00 Nicky's - Big Baby
19:00 Los Gallos - Carne en su jugo
    20:00 Delicias de Mexico | Troha's
21:00 MOVIE - Jiro Dreams of Sushi - since we don't have any Great Sushi, we could watch a movie about it!
22:00 MOVIE - Jiro Dreams of Sushi?
    23:00 Skylark
    0:00 Minghin
    1:00 Big Star
    2:00 Red Hot Ranch
3:00 Bai Cafe - Turkish cabbie joint (not sure if this is 24-hour)
    4:00 Hae Woon Dae
5:00 Diner Grill - slingers, of course
    6:00 Nha Hang
    7:00 Shan
8:00 Nhu Lan Bakery - open at 7:30am
    9:00 Moon's | Ruby's (either or?)
10:00 JP Graziano's | Palmer House - subs and scrubs
11:00 Intelligentsia | The Berghoff - caffeine and beer

I can envision an alternative side trip to the Nicky's - Los Gallos jaunt --perhaps to include Uncle John's BBQ at Jimmy's in Hyde Park. And perhaps for folks who think a movie, even if it's about food, a cheap stunt to get out of eating--maybe a mini Thai drinking snack tour at TAC, Spoon, Sticky and Aroy!?

The first 12 hours are probably more challenging, but certainly doable by public transportation and little walking. The Archer bus ride could inspire a lot of serendipitous stops along the way.

Manny's 1141 South Jefferson-- #12 Roosevelt Bus to
Italian Superior Bakery 933 S. Western -- #94 California Bus to
La Chapparita 2500 S. Whipple -- #21 Cermak Bus to
Mangia Fresca 2556 S Archer-- walk or #8 Halsted Bus to
    Maria's 960 W. 31st walk next door to
    Pleasant House 964 W. 31st #62 Archer bus to
    Nicky's 6142 S Archer #62 Archer bus to
    Los Gallos 4252 S. Archer #52 Kedzie / #60 Blue Island to
    Delicias de Mexico | Troha's 4151 W 26th

I threw out the movie to see if people had an interest. Jiro Dreams of Sushi will hopefully still be at Landmark Century on the 20th--timing, may or may not work out.

    HI,

I recommend a visit, because I have seen bakeries in Chinatown post 7 or 8 am openings. When I arrived at opening time, there people deep into their breakfasts who had clearly been there for a while.

I have also been skunked arriving on time, see staff working inside and opening 20 minutes past opening times. The key arrival was the guy with the cashbox.
