Looking forward to this documentary about one of the world's foremost sushi chefs.

Does anyone know when or where it will open in Chicago?

I watched it this past week when I was in San Francisco. I thought it was a well made "documentary" on the behind-the-scenes of the restaurant. Interviews with him, his sons, his apprentices (past and current) gave me great insight to the reason why sushi masters in Japan do what they do.

I was in the theatre with a bunch of young hipster-ish people, which surprised me since I expected a low turnout. But it was half full! I am not sure if it's because I take the dedication of sushi masters too seriously, but it was pretty annoying to have the everyone laughing when they were talking about all the hard work they had to go through to master each element of making great sushi. There were some chuckle worthy moments, but none that I actually laughed out loud. It could have been me, but I thought it was a little disrepectful... :)

Anyways, I would love you hear what you think when you see it!

Thanks for posting this. I wouldn't have known to seek it out if I hadn't seen the mention here. Saw it today in Pittsburgh. A super documentary with a few chuckle inducing moments as CrazyC noted. Great scences of Tsukiji also. Interesting twist at the end though sort of sad...
I've not seen tamago(yaki) like that.

(had a massive burger, fries + glass of Bell's oberon right before the show - YMMV but not sure you want to be hungry during or after the movie)

Saw this movie yesterday. I say, if you saw the true beauty of this movie, immediately catch a flight out to L.A., spend the $500 a head, and experience firsthand the masterwork of Hiroyuki Urasawa at Urasawa. It may be the closest thing to culinary spirituality you may ever experience in your life. If I recall correctly, trixie-pea had a tear of joy running down her cheek after ingesting Hiro's very first offering. No joke.

kevinEats is a wonderful blogger from SoCal who posted about his magical experiences at Urasawa a few years back:

Oh, and btw, I really enjoyed the movie! So true, Das (sazerac), Great Tsukiji fish market shots.

I thoroughly enjoyed this documentary as well. I found Jiro to have many humorous lines, as well as astute ones that showcase how he is incredibly passionate about sushi.

"Nowadays, parents say stupid things to their children. They say that if they don't succeed, they can come home. Those children turn out to be failures." *Not the exact quote
"You have to love your job. You must fall in love with your work."

When he brushes the top of the fish with soy, he does it with such grace and the visuals are absolutely stunning.

Good! I am not the only one... I still remember every single dish I had at Urasawa. Without doubt the best Japanese experience I've had in the US!

I just watched this (on DVD from Netflix), and am sad to have to send it back, as I can think of several people I'd like to show it to, and as I'd like to watch it myself again and again. Well, maybe I won't slip it back into the mailing envelope just yet.

It's streaming on Netflix, if you have that option available to you. I'm planning on watching it this weekend.
