The Collier's poweful welsh cheddar is phenomenal. A really great, tangy cheese and a steal at 6.99 a pound. It has won many awards in the uk. It's wrapped in black and has a picture of a miner on the front(!). If you like your cheese this is a must.

For years I've been buying whole cuts at Costco and claiming (assuming) it was a great deal. I had the scale out last week as I butchered a sirloin and took the time to weigh everything before I vacuum sealed it and threw it in the freezer.

The whole 12 lb. Sirloin (choice) right out of the package:



Sirloin is definitely one of my favorite cuts, very flavorful and is very reasonably priced. It was $3.69/Lb., or $45 for the entire piece. After butchering I got the following cuts out of it:

- 2 lb. 13 oz. Roast (Coulotte)
- 4 lb. 9 oz. various steaks
- 1 lb. 10 oz. Kebab meat
- 1 lb. 10 oz. grind meat

The remainder was fat and silver that I'll use to clean the grill and grease pans. All in all only 1 lb. 7 oz. wasn't straight up meat of one cut or another, and the vast majority was steaks and a roast. Here are the final cuts, from the top going clockwise:

- Fat and Scraps
- Grind meat
- Roast
- Steaks (all along the left side)
- Kebab meat in the center



All in all, definitely a good deal.

Any idea whether they will take back a warranty replacement for something purchased there? We bought a Cuisinart pressure cooker a year and change ago, and it died recently (still withtin warranty). Warranty meant that we had to ship the old one to Cuisinart, which cost nearly $20, and then pay $10 shipping to have them send a new one. The new one has been tried twice, and both times had the same problem as the old one after it died; it comes up to pressure, beeps loudly, and then basically shuts off. I would have exchanged the first one at Costco, but they don't carry it anymore, and apparently this is a known problem according to the current Amazon rewiews (which makes me wonder if that's why Costco doesn't carry it anymore).

I am going to give the new one one more shot, and if that doesn't work, a) give Cuisinart a piece of my mind, and b) see if Costco will give us our money back. Any other thoughts? I'm bummed, because when the thing worked, it was fabulous.

If it's the same model, you have all the original accessories, and it's not obviously branded in some way as a refurbished unit then you'll be able to return it without a problem.

It's the same size, although labeled as a 6 qt. rather than the 4 qts. that the old one was labeled. But the 6 qt. label apparently means that although the liner holds 6 qts., you aren't supposed to fill it past 4 qts. So functionally there's no difference. I suppose I could just tell them the whole story and see what they say.

I'd only volunteer the whole story if they notice the 6qt/4qt thing, which they probably won't.

Note that Costco has changed their appliance return policy, something to do with people buying big TVs, watching some important game, then returning the TV the next week...

They changed their electronics return policy several years ago. Not so much for the reasons you state (which happens with some regularity) but because people would use it as a "trade-up" system to get the "latest and greatest", paying only once. It's now 90 days for TVs and higher-end electronics, still plenty of time to catch all of March Madness before returning the 60" LCD.

Yep. Only the items listed below must be returned within 90 days. And, in fact, the items listed below are returnable after longer than 90 days if you bought them before the policy changed. You're grandfathered in.

You know, you could treat the fat and scraps in the upper right of your picture with some ammonia and have perfectly good meat

Yeah, it was a while ago. But still, if you bought a TV at Costco in January of 2007, you can still return it for a full refund.

Rumor is that Costco is going to build on the Edward Don warehouse space at 26th and Harlem in North Riverside. Don is moving to Bolingbrook.

I've seen a lot of posts here about the meat at costco, but how about the fish? I've been wanting to buy some, but am nervous. Anyone have good luck with the fish?

They don't usually have that broad a selection of fish. They generally have famed salmon on hand. It's of decent quality and I only use it for smoking. The wild salmon (when it's in season) is always a good value. The frozen cod is excellent, both on price and quality. I haven't tried any of the other frozen fish. The smoked salmon (farmed and wild) is excellent also - and a great value.

The frozen steelhead is great and a fantastic value. I just saute the filets in a little butter.

The smoked whitefish spread is outstanding.

Location varies by store but usually on an endcap in the refrigerated coolers (the tall ones where the cheeses and refrigerated prepared foods are) along with the smoked salmon/packaged sushi. It's in a rectangular white plastic tub.

I usually see it in the open cases near the sausages and smoked salmon.

Lately I've been buying the frozen hake filets, and cooking them for lunch to practice my fish skills. I didn't know until I read the label that hake is what I ate many, many times as "merluza" in Chile. It is almost always served deep-fried there. I've been working on learning how to pan-fry and sauté it. It is the least expensive of the frozen fish filets at Costco, so a good choice for my home schooling.

They were already out of it yesterday. Just saw farmed stuff... Steelhead probably.

My wife was told by one of the employees at the Glenview store that the vintage Tuscan olive oil has been discontinued. I'm guessing that's not accurate and that it's merely sold out for the year (at this store) but I suppose it could be true. Anyone have any information about this?

I was at the Niles Costco last week and I found one bottle of the Tuscan mixed in with the lesser quality liter bottles. I asked where the rest of the Tuscan oil was and was told that they were "out". Not sure if it is discontinued completely, but i'm hoping it's only done for the season.

It's consistent with Costco's "treasure hunt" philosophy that they carry some items on and off for limited times.
