A post on the shopping thread reminded me of brown rice sushi i have had on the west coast. Has anyone found anyplace serving brown rice sushi that is worth recommending?

I think they do it at Ai. If not all brown rice, I think they offer a brown/white rice mixture. I haven't tried it, but their sashimi is very good.

Any updates since 2007 on places that serve brown rice sushi? Mr. Maki and I are going through a "gastronomic lifestyle change" and it would really help to have brown rice sushi. And if it's in the NW suburbs, or north side of the city, even better.

I think now that most do but often it is off the menu, just ask. The last few places I went Indie Cafe, Sushi Lux (brown and black rice), Blue Ocean all had brown rice.

Yes! I found a review on Yelp ( ) confirming that they do- it's one of my sister's favorite places, so I'm sure we'll take advantage of that.

The Sea Ranch on Lake in Wilmette (related to Aki Hana, noted above) has brown rice sushi. The Sea Ranch in Evanston (on Dempster) probably does also.

Are any of forzagto's recommendations close enough?

Actually, Sushi Luxe and Blue Ocean are closer than I thought. My sense of direction is terrible.
I looked up Blue Ocean and their website is nearly non-existant. There are very recent Yelp reviews, so I'm guessing they're still in business.

This? Seems pretty existent to me.

I tried going there last fall, but got there when they were closed between lunch and dinner, and couldn't wait around, so I haven't tried them.

Fin Sushi Bar in Ravenswood at the corner of Wilson and Hermitage has a specific maki (Sesame Brown Rice) that comes with brown rice instead of white rice, and they also serve it as an accompaniment to one of their entrees. I'm guessing they would be willing to accommodate someone who wanted all brown rice for their rolls, but I don't know for sure. Fin is pretty good, maybe a touch on the pricey side, but it's a regular place for us. Plus it's relatively close to Lincoln Square.

I went to Blue Ocean and had a decent meal, but they no longer do brown rice sushi.
