I'm thinking of bringing a big ol' thermos to keep us warm in the wee hours - do you prefer coffee or hot chocolate?
    Maybe I'll just bring both.

Are we going to keep a list of who will show up when and where or will it be drop in?

Also did you think of having someone being the official tweeter for the group so people could follow where people are if they want to join in but can not come to the whole thing. Even if you have plans they can change and if you could do some tweets it might be helpful. Also post pics!!!

For whatever reason, I woke up this AM with a hankering for cocina de parque, specifically cocina de futbol de parque Montrose see here for a bit of background. I know most of the action is on Sundays, but I'm wondering if there may be stuff going on on Saturday that would make a sunrise trip to the lakefront an interesting part of the Chowathon.

Then, as I was thinking about trying to squeeze Montrose beach food into the 24 Hours of Chow, I was stricken by the horror that potential itineraries do not include a southside donut shop (Old Fashioned or Dat), nor a related trip to Calumet Fisheries.

Listen, I agree that at least some portion of the event should occur on public transportation, both for logistical reasons and for commemorative reasons, but I, personally, feel that if we try to do the whole thing on public transportation, we limit ourselves too much. Not only should we be able to branch out to SE 95th street, we should want to hit some of the key spots from 10 years ago like Johnnies and Freddy's.

I think think there will almost for sure be people driving, at least in the first half. I would think, nay suggest, that we work out something mostly akin to what we did last time, that is have drivers until a certain point, and then ditch the car(s) somewhere.

What do people think of that, or do most people prefer a all public transportation event. Obviously, if we have drivers, we need people willing to drive.

I'm all for doing this on public transportation. I find I can get nearly anywhere in the city limits, given enough time.

I would love to join this. Just the thought of saying(bragging) I did this makes me want to go!

The one thing stopping me is, how Vegetarian friendly are these places? otherwise I would just be tagging along without experiencing the event!

    Thanks

My friend patoriq, veteran of first Chowathon, has brought to my attention the possibility of renting a 15- person van from O'Hare Enterprise for about $300. He has volunteered to be designated driver. Thoughts?

Love it! I think taking the transportation issues out of the equation would be great on many levels (eliminating places that aren't PT friendly, finding/waiting for PT, parking, driving/drinking, etc.)

I support the van idea and will be hopping in and out via car myself. To me, the GrubStreet article underscores the need to provide a heads-up to the places on the schedule that a small horde will be arriving. I'm happy to help with those calls, unless they're somehow counter to the spirit of the original event.

I'm not opposed to calling ahead to give restaurants a heads-up, but I doubt we'll know how many people are going to show up at any one place until right before the visit to that place.

What we definitely need to lock down is a rough outline of where we'll be and when. This outline would also enable people to meet up at certain points in the journey and then drop out whenever they need to (and perhaps rejoin later).

Santander raises an excellent point. With the publicity (and with the board being much larger than Chowhound in 2002), one could easily imagine 30 people or more at some of the restaurants, which would overload many restaurants if they were not prepared, even larger ones. Perhaps one should get a sense perhaps of who will attend each hour. While we don't necessarily need a commitment, I could imagine dozens of LTHers (and others) participating.

If anyone feels inspired to spreadsheet this out, have at it.

I'm feeling that we probably need to reserve a van pretty soon to make sure one is available when we need it. I will take care of that.

First get a firm list of restaurants, and then a poll with 24 questions: will you attend at noon, 1 pm, 2 pm, etc.

I'm guessing that everyone doesn't eat at every stop--at least not full individual orders--so while there may be a lot of us, it won't necessarily be an overwhelming number of people to feed at once. Or maybe it will

Absolutely. And if the place is too small to accomodate all of us, some of us can eat in the van, al trunko, etc. I just don't see a logistics problem, and I'm hesitant to call a place and say "Fifteen people are coming," when what that actually means is maybe five "entrees" will be served.

Was just talking to patoriq, who suggested that people who join the group in progress could bring along items from their locations that we could all taste in transit, thus further widening the scope of deliciousness to be enjoyed.

I think it should be a requirement for joining the tour...and the group votes thumbs up or down on admittance based on the creativity (and deliciousness) of the profferred item

My motivations are purely selfish, but I really think warning the restaurants will ruin the fun of seeing the proprietors faces as 15 greasy, disheveled people walk in.

Another stab at itinerary, taking into account previous suggestions and the fact that we will have a 15-person van. Note: there are no doubt logistic impossibilities here, but I'm working to get consensus on the places the peleton will visit. I've included the Freddy's/Klas/Johnnie's/Gene and Jude's branch, but I fear this could end up eating up a lot of commute time.

    Friday, Noon: Manny’s
    1PM: La Chapparita
    2PM: Filbert’s
    3PM: Ribs n’ Bibs/Uncle John’s/Jimmy’s Woodlawn Tap
    4PM: Freddy’s
    5PM: Klas
    6PM: Johnnie’s/Gene & Jude’s
    7PM: Pleasant House/ Maria’s
    8PM: Troha/ Delicias de Mexico
    9PM: Ed’s Potsticker House (quarry?)
    10PM: Chi Cafe
    11PM: Skylark
    Midnight: Jim’s Original/Maxwell Street Express
    1AM:Bai Cafe
    2AM: Big Star
    3AM: Arturo’s/Lazo’s
    4AM: Redhot Ranch
    5AM: Shan
    6AM: Nha Hang
    7AM: Don Pedro’s
    8AM: Diner Grill
    9AM: Green City Market
    10AM: JP Graziano/Palmer House/Max on Adams
    11AM: Intelligentsia/Berghoff

I'd suggest, since diner grill is 24hr, move that before shan/nha hang. Since nha opens right at 6am, that could be too early to hit them with a group. Or does that mess up the driving flow? we could always call ahead to nha hang to make sure,

So that chunk could look more like.

    4AM: Redhot Ranch
    5AM: Diner Grill
    6AM: Shan
    7AM: Nha Hang
    8AM: Don Pedro’s
    9AM: Green City Market

You make a good point, and sometime soon we're going to need to map these places out to make sure we can easily go from one to another.

To avoid rush hour, I'm thinking we should maybe go directly from Manny's to Johnnie's and knock out that far western branch (including Freddy's, etc.) early on:

    Friday, Noon: Manny’s
    1PM: Freddy’s
    2PM: Klas
