A friend of mine wanted to make sushi at home and wondered on some good cookbooks/reference resources to get her started?

    Anyone have any thoughts?

    Thanks.

There are two books I would recommend for beginners:

Sushi at Home, by Kay Shimizu

Sushi American Style, by Tracy Griffith

The Shimizu book assumes you have access to traditional sushi ingredients.

The Griffith book mainly covers maki that a purist might find repulsive, but it is a great tutorial on maki basics. And I've found many of the recipes to be outstanding and perfect to serve along with regular sushi to folks who aren't big on traditional Japanese ingredients (e.g. kids):

Miss Piggy Roll: smoked pork, fresh peach slices, jalapeno chiles, etc.
BLT hand roll: wasabi mayo, tomato, bacon, avocado, baby lettuce, etc.
Cowboy roll: sliced grilled steak, wasabi mayo, gorgonzola, onions, etc.
