I have to say, I don't find this terribly surprising. Sam Wo's was hands down the dirtiest-looking place I have ever voluntarily eaten in, but I was willing to give it a try after hearing how wonderful it was. It was...OK. I had a plate of something limp and starchy. Still, it is an institution, and it's sad that it might be going away because repairs will just be too costly.

I've eaten there. It wasn't bad, but not good either. Kind of a cool little place though.

I lived here in the 70's and spent many an evening on the third floor (enter through the street level kitchen and go up the stairs on the right). Presided over by Edsel Ford Fong, who would kiss all women, throw a check and pencil @ you to write your own order (tomato beef was the dish of choice) and remind you "don't forget the tax, asshole!"

I was in San Francisco last week for a conference and someone mentioned seeing the lines around the block. I gotta say, I do think it seemed a little odd that the city let them remain open for a period of time despite the violations...and that people knowingly lined up around the block. (Do I risk losing my LTH card if I express my unwillingness to knowingly eat at dirty restaurants? Ignorance is bliss.)
