Due to unprecedented demand, I am organizing dinner and a movie for this Friday, August 19.

Dinner: 6:30 p.m., Father & Son restaurant, North Avenue

Movie: 8:15 p.m., "The Aristocrats," Piper's Alley cinema (North and Wells)

Note that Father & Son was selected for thematic reasons only; if anyone has another, better suggestion in the neighborhood, please let me know.

Fair Warning/PSA: "The Aristocrats" is for ADULTS ONLY. They card at the box office, as well they ought to. Anyone who thinks they would be offended by 90 minutes of non-stop obscene (not merely dirty) joke-telling really should not plan on attending this movie.

    Yours,

    JiLS

You kill. No, really, you do.

I'd like to make at least the movie (not sure I can get downtown that early). You were planning to get tickets ahead of time?

An interesting point, and one that Mrs. JiLS already noted. There is, of course, a possibility of a sellout. There are many perverts in this city. Anticipating this possibility, Fandango does allow you to purchase in advance. Accordingly, I suggest those who are interested in attending purchase tickets at Fandango.com; you can pick up your ticket at the theater on a "will call" basis (although they will probably still card you). As far as I can tell, you can only buy tickets day-of-show at Fandango.com; however, if you do so before noon Friday, I don't foresee any problems, as most perverts are still sleeping off their Thursday night toot binge at that hour.

FYI, to train/numb the sensibilities in preparation for Friday's much anticipated and sure to be tasteless gotterdammerung, I'd recommend the Comedy Central Roast of Pamela Anderson. Having watched it at dinner tonight, I feel that, now, I am ready.

I adhered to the rules and still had an utterly miserable pizza. Gah. What a horrible restaurant.

Although I can't be there, I'd suggest either Adobo Grill or Salpicon. I still contend that F&S's has good, not great, pizza, particularly thin crust.

Another option that you guys might want to consider is seeing the film at Esquire Theater on East Oak St. It's playing every half hour or so.

Then you guys could go to Rosebud Steakhouse (192 East Walton), or the somewhat less aristocratic (but delicious) Silver Spoon (710 N Rush).

trixie-pea, do you know if the esquire is carding? Beth's 17 year old brother is coming in to town for the weekend and we'd love to find a theater that will let him in.

    Ed,

Yes, unfortunately they are double-carding (once at the box office and then before you go into the theater). We went to a Saturday matinee, and they were carding everyone--old and young alike.

You might give it try with his I.D.--as I found the folks who were carding, were more just going through the motions of carding, than actually looking at the date. It's insane that a 17 year-old person can not see this movie.

I mean sure, it's foul-mouthed--but at the same time charming and reverent.

Sadly won't be able to join in the fun, but I have a friend in the area, so I'll offer my two cents regarding pre-movie dining.

I just had carry-out from Old Jerusalem that was quite good. It's Middle Eastern, but at least the name sounds vaguely borscht belt, right? Twin Anchors' old school charm might pair well with the movie. Both are better choices than Marcello's. If you're feeling more drinky, Spoon on Wells has a surprisingly good menu for a restaurant/lounge place.

Can't wait to hear the movie reviews...

    REVISED PLAN:

Dinner: 6:30 p.m., Adobo Grill (North and Wells)

Movie: 8:15 p.m., "The Aristocrats," Piper's Alley cinema (North and Wells)

I think to avoid confusion, we should stick with the plan to see the 8:15 show at Piper's Alley. That being said, as indicated above, I have no strong interest in Marcello's/Father & Son. If I recall correctly, Adobo is right inside the Piper's Alley building, or at least it connects from the inside. Accordingly, unless somebody thinks the food tastes like snot, I'm going to say Adobo Grill is the best dinner choice.

Another issue with Adobo is that if our group is big enough, we may need a reservation. So far, I count five (Mrs. JiLS and I; Steve; Hammond; and GAF). If that's it, then we'll just take our chances. See ya tomorrow at 6:30!

I may be the only one around this board, but I LIKE Father and Son pizza (the original/thin-thin). I also like a lot their fried chicken, and they have real good cole slaw too (with a hint of horseradish).

I've tried to like Father & Son a few different times over the years. Usually, I'm good for a pizza or two before I start to tire of the rubbery cheese, too sweet sauce and not all that great sausage. Then I'll swear off the stuff for 5 - 10 years before forgetting why I quit eating it last time and go through the same excercise again.

At least you can't fault them on their consistency! :)

So, GAF, Mrs. JiLS and I are confirmed for dinner at 6:30 (I made a reservation for 3). David and Steve, it sounded like you might have trouble committing to that dinner time, but if you want to stop in, we'll probably be hanging out after dinner at the Adobo bar "preparing" for the movie.

I hadn't, but I know it's been around since at least the mid-90s, and I have no reason to suspect it hasn't been around longer.

It seems unlikely that any joke as graphic and over the top as this one, but yet as unfunny as this one (let's be serious, the premise of the joke itself is pathetic) isn't likely to get published much.

However, this guy managed to find some references dating back to 1972.

By the way, this is my favorite google excerpt of the day:

A tip of the silk hat to stevez, GAF and Bob S. for joining in Friday's festivities. It was a blast. I'm thinking going forward, after the movie has left the first-run theaters, we need to find a means to integrate the food and the movie. I certainly think Cantu or Achatz could handle that challenge quite well, as they are ... shall I say ... the new Aristocrats of Chicago cuisine. Perhaps they could find a way to cater a presentation of "The Aristocras" at Vic's Brew and View? Or maybe on a 70-inch HDTV screen in Chef Trotter's kitchen?
