    Juliette Gordon Low and the History of the Girl Scout Cookie
    with Shannon Henry Kleiber

    June 6 at 7:15 PM Goodman Atwood Community Center, Bolz Room A;
    149 Waubesa Street, Madison 53704; 608-241-1574

    Shannon Henry Kleiber, author of the new book: “On My Honor: Real Life Lessons From America’s First Girl Scout,” will talk about the history of the iconic American treat, the Girl Scout Cookie. From its beginnings in 1917 when a few parents and children decided to make homemade cookies to help support their troop, to now, when the Thin Mint is the third best-selling cookie in the country, Girl Scout cookies have become a familiar part of our society.
    Shannon will also talk about the culinary heritage of the Girl Scout founder, Juliette Gordon Low, who thought girls should know how to cook in addition to tying knots and developing a career.
    Shannon Henry Kleiber is a former Washington Post staff writer and columnist. She has also written for many other newspapers and magazines, including The Christian Science Monitor and Edible Madison, where she is on the editorial advisory board.
