I'm trying to get a bottle of the Bruichladdich 3D3 for my boyfriend's birthday -- it was his first favorite before moving on to various Ardbegs. These days, though, it seems to be rather hard to come by in the States. wine-searcher.com claims it has 17 places selling it, but without a subscription, I can only see one of them (which I've called, and I'm waiting for them to call back). If anyone here has an idea where one might hunt for hard-to-find Scotches in the States (or a subscription to wine-searcher.com!), I'd appreciate the leads. Thanks so much!

I'd call (or stop by) Warehouse Liquors on Wabash, just south of Harrison. They have a pretty diverse and well-chosen collection of whisky. I don't think they would ship, though. There's always Binny's, of course, and they do ship (if that matters here) -- they even have a whisky hotline:

Thanks! I'd tried searching their site (with no luck), but didn't realize they had a hotline. I've emailed Brett. Fingers crossed!

I know I've seen it years ago at Binny's, and the Internet confirms they did sell it once upon a time, but it's not on their website anymore. It seems to me that it has been discontinued, which may be why you're having difficulty finding it.

The 3D3 was a limited edition released 6 years ago...I believe it was a run of something like 10-12,000 bottles, so you may stumble upon one locked away in a nicer liquor store's whiskey case, but it probably won't be easy or cheap to score one.

If he's into peat, you might consider one of Bruichladdich's Port Charlotte or Octomore lines...I haven't tried either, sadly (I've only had the classic Laddies), but it sounds like the Port Charlottes are more in line with the 3D series, while I've heard the Octomores are way more intense.

I'm OK with "not easy" and "not cheap" in this instance -- its rarity is part of what would make it such a good gift (well, that and its sentimental value to him). You're right in that it is proving very difficult to track down, though -- Binny's and one other store seem to have a bottle of the second edition, but no luck on the third, yet. There seem to be many European options for purchasing it (again, back to the "not easy" and "not cheap," with the added complication of "not likely to deliver particularly quickly.) I may resort to the Port Charlottes, since online consensus seems to be that the replacement for the 3D series ("Peat") is not so good.

I've ordered from this site before with no problems at all. Shipping is not cheap (nor particularly fast), the exchage rate isn't great (though, it's certainly better than it's been) and you'll probably have to pay a foreign transaction fee on your credit card but if you really want it, maybe this is the place. I'm not sure if the link above is for the exact product you're seeking.

After exhausting my Stateside options (Binny's did offer that they could obtain a bottle of the 3D2, FYI), I ended up ordering from: http://www.scottishwhiskystore.com/shop ... -campbell/

I was going to say that I had chosen this site over the one you posted, Ronnie, because it was much cheaper (46.03 pounds), but since my order, the price has risen drastically (I wonder if that's a result of my purchase?)

Even though he only got a picture of it for his actual birthday (today), he's very, very pleased and surprised by the prospect of its eventual arrival.

(note: I didn't deliberately wait until the last minute :D -- it wasn't until he returned from Memorial Day weekend that he told the story about how this was his first favorite....)

    Thanks, all!
