I have not been able to find a local source for Frankfurter/New England rolls as described in the link
    http://nehotdogrolls.webs.com/
    Any sightings would be appreciated.

    You will not find any.
Woodmans does have split top rolls for dogs but believe me theyvare not the same in texture as a New England roll and I know as I was brought up eating them in New England.
You also cannot find the paper sleeves that are so important in holding a clam or lobster roll together!-Dick

Yeah, I have never seen those anywhere. Usually Woodman's would be the place but as budrichard noted, they don't carry them.

I recall Serious Eats recommending Pepperidge Farms top sliced hot dog buns for those that cannot find the real deal.

I am affiliated with Pepperidge Farm, and top sliced hot dog buns are not available in this market.

    Thanks All.
Looks like I will have to keep baking my own - Chicago Metallic sent me the pans some years ago for them. I was just hoping to find some locally and not have to do that anymore.

The closest I've found them to Chicago is in Ohio. Though, they only seem to be available in the summer. Nickels Bakery is the brand that sells them (at least in the Cleveland/NE Ohio area).

Next time you're in Montréal, pick some up. :)

Of all things, hot dogs are a *big* deal in MTL, esp. "Michigans", which canonically come in top-split but not breakaway-sided rolls. Standard 'steamed' dogs come in both kinds of top-split rolls.

But hot dogs are one thing, 'burgers are another: finding a decent burger in MTL is basically impossible. The meat-grind is too fine. :(

When I first moved to Milwaukee, the buns were available at a couple of Kohl's groceries in the frozen section.
Since Kohl's went under, no longer.

I am affiliated with Pepperidge Farm, and top sliced hot dog buns are not available in this market.

At one time years ago (1970's) the Pepperidge Farms outlet next to Hippo's Hot Dogs in (Schaumburg/Hoffman estates?) had them.
Is there a Pepperidge Farm number that you can suggest that can ship?

You could try the bakery in Downers Grove-- ( 630 ) 968-4000 and ask for someone in bakery sales.
This might be productive, or it could be a "wild goose chase"
    Good luck---

I made the trip yesterday and it was quite a trip. Nicole's hot dog buns are not quite New England style but are a very good substitute and the best I have found here in the Mid West.
I picked up some lobster at H Mart ($5.95/#) and poached them off and they are shucked awaiting thier fate in Nicole's buns. Had a couple yesterday just boiled and they were excellent. Came in Friday and they were kicking very nicely.
Nicole's hot dog buns are not split, can be toasted in butter very nicely and will stand up to a roll of fried soft shell, clams or lobster. If you plan on a hot dog, I would make it a big one as the buns are substantial.-Dick

Update--- Pepperidge Farm has decided to produce top sliced hot dog buns for Chicago. The product will start appearing in your local Jewel at the end of the week.

I will try the PF buns but a good lobster roll is just not a top slice but the ability to hold a generous amount of lobster, clams or whatever and not fall apart. For a regular hot dog bun the rigidity of the the hot dog helps hold the thing together. We shall see.
    Thanks for the info.-Dick

Been looking for split top buns for years. After this tread, started looking around again. Found (stumbled across?) something called King Hawaiian Original Sweet Hot Dog Buns. Tried them with some Nathan's beef dogs. Turned out great. Reminded me of the split tops I used to know and enjoy.

Could not find any PF top sliced buns so last Monday it was back to Nicole's which is easier to get to on a weekday as the surface streets are not as crowded in tha area s on a Saturday.
Purchased 8 lobster at H-Mart for $5.99/#. Note the shells as becoming soft and meat is shrinking, so no more lobster for me until the Fall.
Had enough meat for for 8 Lobster Rolls and that was one more than the number of diners. told my son, no sampling as we shucked the lobsters, we need all the meat. i also don't carry live lobster overnight as they invariably die no matter how held, so we cook and shuck on the day of purchase, the meat will easily hold two days.
Everyone was very happy with the butter grilled Nicole's buns, finely chopped celery and QP mayo with the lobster meat.
    A real 4th of July treat!-Dick
