    Driving on Milwaukee Ave in that odd south corner between the junctions with River and Sanders is a new sign: Rio de Churrascaria, Brazillian Steakhouse. Looks like it will be a while before it opens yet, but I'll update when I hear more. It might not be until spring, when my boys have graduation and confirmation events.

    The name is disturbing from my strict grammatical upbringing: Unless Portuguese is that different from Spanish, they're saying the equivalent of Steakhouse's Morton instead of Morton's Steakhouse.

    It's going into the old Jim McMahon space, which was really set up with a big open barn of a sports bar, with the acoustics of the old Chicago Stadium. How they can adapt that to a more fancy, sit-down restaurant, I'm not sure. The one time I was there for a park district football party, the noise level was nauseating.

    Doesn't it translate as "River of Meat"?

    More like 'River of "Steakhouse"', I'd say. (Okay, "grilled-meat-house"...)

    I imagine it's intended to evoke Rio de Janeiro and perhaps play off the location near River Road. (And nobody at the restaurant is really worried about whether it makes sense in Portuguese or not, I'm sure. At least it's not as bad as the restaurant sign I spotted last fall in Rockford: "Grazie! Cuisina Italia")

    Wow... That is bad, I think Rio de Grilled-Meat-House is lame but at least attempts to be clever. Cuisina Italia, God, that's just baaaad...

    Anyone want to go to Boni Vino for lunch?

    OMG they are opening up everywhere. There's some other one opening up in Glenview. What's with the sudden craze? I just want a taste of Brazilian food every now and then, but not the entire cow!

    Ppersonally, I have thought the opposite - when are they going to arrive? There were six of these Brazilian restaurants in Salt Lake City three years ago, and most in the $15-20 range.

    But why are they all churrascaria? There are other styles of Brazilian food.

    Because the audience for this isn't people who want Brazilian food; it's people who want a steak house, but want the illusion of having something different. (As I said here.)

    Interesting to note, in that context, that in John Drury's 1931 guide, Romanian (or as he spells it, Roumanian, as in, "And I'm Queen Marie of Roumania") food seems to hold the same position:

    GOLDSTEIN'S 821 West 14th Street
    A tenderloin steak, as only the Roumanians know how to prepare it, awaits you in this unassuming restaurant on the first floor of Mrs. Goldstein's home over in the Valley. Mrs. Goldstein, who is manager, cashier, waitress and chef, prepars all of her steaks as in her native Roumania-- that is, by broiling over a charcoal fire. The result is something that touches the palate in the same manner as a Beethoven sonata touches the soul."


    So Roumainian steak (specifically, it would appear, Roumanian Jewish steak) seems to have been very much a known quantity, as Brazilian steak is today. (And what the heck was the Valley? I haven't run across that name for that area before. A reference to the near South Side before its street level was raised, I wonder?)

    It remains known today as well. The Roumanian Deli/Butcher Shop on North Clark St. (somewhere around Lunt) is a Kosher meat market that has some very fine quality skirt steaks. They are famous for them among the old school Jewish community.

    BTW, I saw this place listed a few days ago too - last week actually, when
    driving from Glenview to Buffalo Grove. However, I actually thought it
    *was* in Glenview - is the "another one in Glenview" a completely
    different place now?

    This Rio de Churrascaria spot is on Milwaukee, saw it on the drive.
    I wasnt sure I had already gotten out of Glenview - or if I had, maybe
    I thought it was Prospect Heights or something. But its within a couple
    minutes drive from Glenview at most. Is there yet another one, in
    a different part of Glenview, now?
