Lately the Korean government has been using the dish Bi Bim Bap as a symbol of Unity. It is a pretty cool concept. Anyhow. here is a short film about Bi Bim Bap and Harmony. I thought it was pretty awesome.

Thanks, Dave, for the link. Very nicely produced. There were a couple of shots in there that I had no idea what the heck they were (even after watching it a few times) but I they kind of added to my enjoyment.

I've never had a bi bim bop that was anywhere near that pretty.

    Hi,

Whenever I watch Kimchee Chronicles - a really terrific show - on PBS. This is always shown because the Korean Government is a sponsor.

Thanks for the link, because I can never get enough of it.

    Regards,

That is a terrific video, gorgeous. Anybody know what those round white discs are that they were drizzling something on?

I don't believe I've ever had fresh peppers of any color on bibimbap?

    Hi,

They look like Daikon radish disks. It could be a sesame oil, though my first thought was fish sauce. Fish sauce in Korean cuisine is not so much used directly, rather it is for preparing some panchan and kimchi side dishes.

This video has the be inspired and/or made by the folks who created Cook'n.

Apparently The Taste of Korea (A.K.A. Hansik), is a cooperative effort between several Korean government and non-profit industry groups, to use new media to promote awareness of Korean food and demonstrate the close relationship between Korean cuisine and the culture in general. Many productions take individual dishes and relate them to specific Korean values such as Unity, Harmony, Respect etc. other pieces are more along the lines of traditional cooking shows, featuring everyday Koreans preparing their favorite traditional dishes and talking about what significance each dish has for them personally. Other bits feature well-kown Korean pop stars. Anyhow, It is a very unique approach for promoting tourism and business using the national cuisine as a metaphor for showing how closely traditional Korean values are reflected in the traditional Korean dishes. I am not sure that we as Americans could do the same (or want to), or maybe the problem is that we could.

Interesting. I find it poorly conceived and virtually unwatchable, a bigger vanity-production waste of precious PBS funds than even that dreadful Batali/Bittman/Goop production.
