I really like the version of Kung Pung Gi at Great Beijing on Lincoln in Lincolnwood.

Had lunch at VIP on Montrose yesterday. Based on suggestions here, I tried the half and half, jajang myun and jjampong. Have to agree that it was deeply average. The jajang myun was the better of the two and I would have it again if I ever went back but probably would not go back unless it was very easy and someone else wanted to go.

The ja jang mien and jambong at the Assi Food Court is the best in the Chicago area, IMO. They also have an ingenious "combo" soup bowl that enables you to order BOTH jambong and ja jang mien half-orders, eliminating my life-long dilemma of which to order and which to beg my friends to order. I can now eat alone at Assi.

I'm with you on this, trotsky. Lai Lai offers another ingenious combo of half jjajangmyun and half tang soo yook, which is Korean-Chinese sweet and sour.
