A friend of mine told me about some guys from Kentucky that lived in his building, who hunted squirrels and raccoons along the railroad tracks on the near northwest side. They had a bunch of squirrel and raccoon tails nailed up on their back porch (which apparently elicited hearty approval from their Romanian landlord). When my buddy asked them if they ever ate possum, they looked at him like he was nuts, and asked "What do we look like, the Beverly Hillbillies?".

Pellet guns make almost NO noise. Frustrated screams when one discovers desecrated tomatoes makes LOTS of noise. I'm just sayin'...

It tastes kind of like pork shoulder but a little gamier. The brain (I ate a whole one) was something between sweetbreads and a chestnut both texturally and flavor-wise. I was really surprised by how tasty it was. All in all, they're good eatin'. :)

Resident preparing squirrel meal causes fire
A Holland Township, Mich. resident’s meal plans were dashed on Wednesday afternoon when his attempt to clean a squirrel before cooking it started a massive fire.

The resident was attempting to remove the animal’s fur using a propane torch on the third floor deck of the Clearview Apartment complex when the deck caught fire, MLive reported.
    ...
although the blaze left all residents unscathed, it rendered 38 units in the building uninhabitable. Of the 38 apartments, eight are ruined and others on the lower level of the complex have smoke and water damage. The fire also burned the roof off of some parts of the building. A firefighter emerged from the scene with a broken toe as well.

Ahhhh . . . memories of my trip to Chatuchak Market in Bangkok, where squirrels are always in abundance . . . I can't imagine we're talking pets here, but who knows:
