Im looking for small amounts of sassafras root and wintergreen leaves...sasparilla, too.
Im trying my hand at root beer syrups from the Andrew Schloss book.
    Spice House doesnt carry them.
Not sure where else to look. I can find them various places online, but in bulk, and not even both in the same site.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

I don't currently stock either item, although I do stock sassafras leaf for making gumbo and peppermint leaf. I do have access to both wintergreen and sassafras root and would be more than happy to bring them in for you. I have been looking to expand our selection of items for making bitters, and this is right in line with that.

I am the owner operator of pinch, by the way.

    Sassafras Root......(=) Road Trip!!!
Just drive up to Sagatuck, Michigan and pull over -anywhere- and dig up yer own.
It grows quite prodigiously up there....and I've even spotted it growing near Lakeside Michigan too!
It's an easy tree to spot- the leaves (when rubbed smell of citrus/lemon) are 3 different shapes- on one tree-

No need to go as far as Michigan...sassafras trees are native to the Indiana Dunes and much of the surrounding area. A side-bonus is that wintergreen grows wild in the area as well, though it's much more difficult to find at this time of year.

Many species of Birch and Spirea contain oil of wintergreen, and they could be used as a substitute.

    Drshoebocks, that would be great!

Im looking for 5 oz dried sarsaparilla, 3 oz dried sassafras root, and just 1/2 oz dried wintergreen leaves.

That is for two different syrup recipes that I want to try. We can PM about details?

    Thanks for answering!

I will order those items and have them in stock for you. I will PM you when they are in. Should be about a week. Please bring in the book when you come in, I'm real interested in checking it out. Are you going to be using these syrups with a soda stream type device?

    great!
    I will bring the book. http://www.amazon.com/Homemade-Soda-Spa ... 1603427961
I do have a soda stream so I just make the syrups and add them to the carbonated water.
I also found some syrup recipes on Food in Jars blog and in her new cookbook, same name. http://www.foodinjars.com/
The NY Times cola recipe is also really amazing. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/06/dinin ... ecipe.html
I quadruple it when I make it :)

I love that it is totally customizable and can have endless variations. And I get to be creative. And drink fun drinks :)

I just made the Homemade Soda recipe for Black Lemonade. It calls for things like sage and crusched chili flakes. Its very zippy.
