I first had their pie a couple of months ago, and though I was impressed with the pie, I didn't visit until this past Saturday. I agree, it is a true Chicago gem, and should be held up as an example of how a bakery/restaurant should be run. The guys behind the counter were very friendly, passionate about what they do, and eager to give out samples. I tried the dairy-free sweet potato ice cream, and the sweet potato cake roll. Both were fantastic. I ended up buying some pie, a slice of cake roll, and some other baked goods.

The loaded sweet potato and other entrees there look amazing too (yes, the loaded is *really* loaded), I'll definitely go back when I'm in the mood for something more substantial. But the pie is really, really great stuff. I'm definitely ordering one for turkey day.

After lunch at Birrieria Zaragoza yesterday, swung by Jimmy Jamm's for something sweet. Between the three of us, we had a slice of pie, bread pudding, and cobbler, along with free samples of the (non-dairy) soft-serve ice cream and bundt cake. The pie was the group favorite - smooth and rich, with just enough spice and sugar, but not so much as to mask the sweet potato flavor. I think it's critical to just get the basic pie - not one with a topping, as it really overpowers the filling.

The guy behind the counter was every bit as nice as the first time I was there, and seemed genuinely enthusiastic about sharing his tuber love.

We were there on Tuesday last week. The two charming fellas there were pleased as punch to see us and give us samples of his cheesecake, bread, brownie, and ice cream. All of these were delicious, but I ordered a whole slice of plain sweet potato pie. It was wonderful, but I think I preferred the airiness of the cheesecake. I also gladly purchased a brownie to go. It was incredibly rich and dark, and it had some kind of airy frosting on top that may also have been sweet potato (the batter was made with sweet potato). Beverly is nowhere near us, but I'd go back just for this brownie.

I took home a menu, and noticed they also do Atomic Cake.

Was the place decorated for a wedding last time you folks were there? The tables and chairs were all swathed in white. I had no idea they did wedding cakes, but they do.

JimmY Jamm's sweet potato cheesecake was a revelation(custardy in the middle, firm and rum cake like at the edges). great:

We took a plain pie with us to our friend's cottage this past weekend. We figured a sweet potato pie would be good munching at some point. We ended up having some with breakfast on Sunday and it was quite tasty. It skewed a bit sweeter than I was expecting, but I appreciated the balance of spices. Half the pie came home with us, so I'll have more opportunities to enjoy it.

I'll join the Jimmy Jamm's fan brigade. I stopped in yesterday after dining just down the street at Top Notch Beefburgers. I love the feeling like you've walked into an old friend's house - they're very welcoming and friendly . . . even gave us samples of sweet potato ice cream and we didn't even ask for them. The guy holding up and spinning the pie on the sidewalk was just awesome - talk about a trip back in time!

And pride in the business was obvious before you tasted anything, and even more obvious after tasting. Sweet potato pie might have been just a tad dense for my liking, but more importantly it was not masked by spices or sugar - very reasonable measurements of both. That being said, I thought the sweet potato pie with the praline topping was outstanding (if a bit over the top sweet).

I love what these guys are doing and I'm glad I got the chance to find out firsthand.

Probably a stupid question, but is the whipped cream they use real? Or is it Cool Whip or Reddi Whip?

Jimmy Jamm's is still going strong! I stopped in on Monday and the tables were covered with tall stacks of empty pie boxes waiting to be filled with Christmas pies.

I tried the sweet potato and honey cream topped pies as I always do and this time also had the praline and pecan sweet potato pie as well. All are on the sweet side, especially the praline one, but all worked for me. The burger/onion ring/shake trifecta at Top Notch followed by pie from Jimmy Jamm's is always a good day.
