Considering the farmer from whom they sourced the tomatoes was going to plow them under due to them being overripe and the organizer said they only can afford tomatoes that are not fit for human consumption, I would say that is likely not the case.

I don't understand the appeal, but Tomatina has been a popular event in Spain for decades.
