There are a few Chicago dining zones that have won almost unqualified praise from the LTH community. Birrieria Zaragoza is one of those places.

    “Unbelievably delicious”, ReneG

My first Zaragoza trip and...I couldn't do much more than hug myself and meditate on how lucky I am :D, boudreaulicious

    ”Great stuff”, JeffB.

    “Wow”, germuska.

“There is nothing about Zaragoza I didn’t love”, ronnie suburban

We’d wanted to have our holiday party at Birrieria Zaragoza for years, but their original location on Pulaski was just too tight for our numbers of LTH partyers.

This year, Birrieria Zaragoza has a new and bigger location, and we’re pleased to announced that the LTH Holiday Party 2012 will be at Birrieria Zaragoza at 2211 W. Lake, Melrose Park on Saturday, December 1, starting at 6PM.

    Order tickets here: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/291733

Norma and John Zaragoza have put together a Mexican holiday menu that features their signature birria and a few other choice items, to wit:

    1st Course
    • Guacamole/Chips
    • Salsa de Molcajete w/Cheese Quesadilla

    2nd Course
    • Pozole/Pork Hominy Soup
    • Tamales (Red Chile, Green Chile, Cheese with Rajas)

    Main Entrée
    • Birria w/trimmings and Hand-Made Tortillas
    • Chicken Birria

    Dessert
    • Citrus Flan
    • Sweet Tamales

This is a meat-o-centric event, but we'll nonetheless be able to accomodate vegetarians to some extent: hand-made tortillas, quacamole, consomme (killer), quesadillas and salsa, some of the tamales (cheese and rajas as well as sweet; none of tamales contain lard), and citrus flan. And rum. Norma also said she will plan to prepare a squash dish specifically for vegetarians. If you want to go with this option, please indicate your vegetarianess on this thread.

Tickets. Tickets are set at $37.50, and that includes dinner, tax, tip and Cuba Libres (we'll provide rum; Mexican soft drinks can be purchased a la carte). You can bring your own alcohol or wine (no corkage fee). As in years past, all ticket sales will go through Brown Paper Tickets (small transaction fee required). Just go to the site and enter your information. Ticket sales close at noon, November 30, 2012. Once you’ve paid, we’ll get updates from Brown Paper Tickets and we’ll enter your name on the guest list. Seating is limited to 80; lots of street parking.

Tickets are non-refundable though they are transferrable, so if you buy a ticket and your plans change, you can sell your ticket to another member of the LTH community. If you do sell your ticket, please let us know who you sold it to so we can update the list of attendees.

Gift Exchange. If you want, please bring a food-related raffle item. For the raffle/gift exchange, all gifts go into a pool and names are drawn. Please bring gifts that others would be happy to receive. If you do bring a gift, you get a ticket and are guaranteed one gift in exchange. We’ve set the price for each gift around $15. Please don't wrap the gift -- we like to see what people are winning before they win it -- but please do put your name (real name or screen name or both) on the gift so that lucky winners know who to thank.

Just so you know, there will be just a few chickens prepared for sampling purposes. Everyone will get a taste of the chicken, but this place is really all about the goat.

Sounds fantastic. Just to check - the consomme was not made from an animal? And the tamale masa does not contain animal fat?

    Hi,

Consomme is not made from an animal, though it is seasoned as if there were goat juices in the soup.

I will double-check on the tamale masa with them. I believe it doesn't, though not willing to bet the farm on this. :)

    Hi.

I am 100% sure on Zaragoza's consomme. this was something I had a hard time believing myself. A sample was brought over to taste. If I was not assured there were no goat or other meat products in there, I would not have believed it.

Tamale masa does have animal fat. They will experiment using something else for the non-meat eaters. One way or another, we will make this work!
