Just a note to say that I have noticed Aldi is carrying a very low cost cast iron pot that would be ideal for making the no knead bread in. Its either a round or an oval dutch oven. Comes in red and blue and the price point is about thirty dollars. People seemed to say good things about it in reviews. I mention this because a few of my friends would like to make the bread but they do not have a suitable pot and can not afford to buy most of the pots on the market as they are quite expensive.

It should be fine for the no knead bread. It looks like the cover has a metal knob that is safe to 500 degrees. Last years model said right on the box that the cover could not be used in the oven, since the knob was plastic.

And even if you get one with a plastic knob, they're pretty easy to replace. Generally, there's just a screw on the underside of the lid. Remove the plastic lid and substitute a handle of your own. I just MacGyvered one with a long bolt, some nuts, and a series of washers I had lying around the workroom.

the one from Aldi is probably fine. I use a cast iron dutch oven from Lodge to make no-knead bread. I'm sure I didn't pay more than $40 for it

I saw these in the boxes today at Aldi. They still had some. The box said safe for stove and oven use. I was able to inspect the similarly made skillet and it was very very heavy. The skillet comes with a smooth black surface and they also have a grill pan. The price is right and looks to be made sturdy. By the way I also saw a large black roasting pan there as well as silicon oven mits so if you are looking for something cost effective these things might fit the bill.

I have a lodge combo cooker that I got from World Market for around that. The lid doesn't have a knob and doubles as a pan, so you can use that as the base as a tall lid.

Any info on country of origin available for Aldi cookware? They seem a little tight-lipped about it.

That is one thing I did not check. I just always assume it is made in China if it is that cheap. Old threads on this pot seem to indicate it is made by an Ohio company that has it made for them in China. It seems that Aldi has brought out similar pans over the past few years but in the past they have not been oven safe but this one is. People seem to say good things about them.

    Thanks - I'll pass, then. It's a false economy.

I actually found my pot at Marshalls in Northbrook maybe 2 years ago. I was trying to find a deal on a Le Creuset and stumbled on a non branded 5qt round enameled cast iron dutch oven for $49. Once I popped the cover and saw made in France I was sold. I also ended up finding a 6qt oval for about $60 so I grabbed that too. These are Staub brand I believe when qvc used to carry them and were discontinued.

I have found some good deals on stuff like that at TJ Maxx and Homegoods too. I think the price point still would be a bit higher than the ones on Aldi but you might not get a made in China one.
