The horse-riding Medes of the Zagros Mountains of Iran remain one of the enigmas of ancient history. They are best known to us through the colorful anecdotes of Greek historian Herodotus and contemporaneous Assyrian inscriptions. The recent publication of the excavation of the Median citadel-palace at Godin Tepe provides some new, first-hand evidence for the way in which Median leaders negotiated power by entertaining guests in unique columned halls with feasts of suckling pig, lamb, and wine.
