Food Blogger, LTHforum member and my very good friend Louisa Chu wrote about the White Castle Cook Off on her WBEZ Movable Feast blog White Castle Cook-Off 2013.

A recent rendition of Sliders in Aspic, however, was an unholy thing. Cold, hard, flavorless, lifeless jelly imprisoning a quartet of White Castle hamburgers in suspended inanimation. Tibetan Buddhists portray Hell as cold. If so, this is what you're force-fed for eternal damnation.

The rest of the dishes at the inaugural, unofficial, local White Castle Cook-Off were actually pretty good, including the ice cream.

I really enjoyed cooking for this party and of course, the party itself. I think my favorite item was the slider-on-a-shingle. Most everything was tasty, but the SLOS was the one I thought really improved on the original. The sweet bun made a superior toast and the sweetness of the reconstituted onions enhanced the cream gravy.

It was a pleasure to meet and re-meet everyone there.

    I could make semifregordito.

    I propose McRib Cookoff 2013.

Didn't anyone make stuffing for chicken or turkey? I'm bummed. This dish always gets press around Thanksgiving, and I was hoping to find out from the cook-off if it's any good.

I never had the stuffing, but I can vouch for the disturbing tastiness of the Broccoli Castlerole, thanks to my sister-in-law.

I didn't either, but maybe it can be.

That's tough. I am not a fan of the Bloody Mary, however, it can't be made much worse. Then again, I'm not a fan of Jell-O either... (sorry, David)

    Hi,

Maybe the Bloody Mary could be a picnic offering!

If nobody signs up next year for round two, it will have died a natural death. :D

Looks like a good time! I'm sorry I had to miss this (well, kind of, but not really as I was in India), but if there's another one, I wanna be there. My own stupid idea, as I discussed with David Hammond, was White Castle blutwurst/black pudding, so it's perhaps a blessing that I wasn't there.

By the way, all the dishes look delicious to me, but I enjoy White Castle (and aspic), so that helps.

Don't get the wrong idea. You would certainly not have liked the aspic.

I just read the description. I didn't realize it was made with unflavored gelatin. I would have made that the old-fashioned way, with gelatin-rich broth, like with pork trotters or veal bones or whatnot (or at least broth + gelatin). I have to admit, incorporating the bun in some sensible way seems to be the biggest challenge.

It was within bounds to not incorporate the bun into the headcheese proper. The bun could have been used for serving with sliced headcheese laid upon it. Maybe some brown mustard from the White Castle mustard selection spread over the headcheese and reserved pickle slices on top.

Data point: I bought the Crave Case with 30 White Castle burgers inside. When I was disassembling them, I found not every White Castle had sliced pickles.
