    David:

I know it's Buk. He's one of my favorite authors. It's an OK story. I was hoping others would chime in with their own tales of horror--I've got one, but I'm saving it for a bit...

My 21st birthday I had a 7:30 am class, and that was it for the day. I came back to the room at 9:am to find my birthday party in progress. Apparently they started swapping out my screwdrivers for vodka with orange food coloring when I couldn't taste anything anymore. All I will say about the hangover is that the son-of-a-gun I roomed with was selling tickets to see me in all my agony. He made sure that an ex-girlfriend was called and she drove two hours to laugh at my agony. Never happened again.

Blah blah blah...so I woke up the next morning at the top of the mountain with a rock as my pillow and an empty bottle of Ernest & Julio Gallo at my side.

Tom Wolfe did a pretty good job describing hangovers in Bonfire of the Vanities.

Oh man, yes. The reporter (played by Bruce Willis in the movie) gave very vivid accounts of alcohol-induced horroes.

When I was in the Army, I once woke up with a screaming hangover in the Nogales Mexico Jail. I had only a vague recollection of how I got there. I do remember sprinting for the border and the Police shooting rounds above my head (or maybe they were just bad shots) which, even in my inebriated state, put a quick end to my attempted escape. The next week was a sordid and miserable tale, the details of which give me goose bumps even 35 years later ( I will spare you those details). I finally managed to smuggle out a message to the Provost Marshal at Ft Hauchuca, who sent my (very displeased) CO to bail me out.

My favorite Bukowski story is when he awoke with fleeting memories of a fight in which he smashed some guy's head in with a typewriter. His wedding story is a great one also. With Bukowski though, every story starts as a drunken tale ending in a horrible hangover story.

Not totally a hangover story but when I turned 21 about 1968, about half of my high school returned home that summer including a number of guys who served in the military. We went out and had dinner and drank every night into the wee hours, ate somewhere or went to someones home to make breakfast, went home and showered and went to work and did the same, day after day. I do not ever remember having a hangover! But we were 21 and had fresh livers!

Galena Cellars in the Valley. Sangria--made with fruit wine. Live bluegrass music. Warm summer day. Two years ago. Still can't drink Sangria. End of story.
