I can't imagine who would want to use this card, or any restaurant responding positively to its presentation, am I overreacting?

Mods, feel free to move this if there is a more appropriate place for it.

I agree with the fella who wrote the post. It's an arrogant threat for free food and preferential treatment, and whoever flashes one should be told to piss off. What happened to the days of anonymous critics? And these days, doesn't everybody tweet/yelp/blog etc etc? There should be a card that says, "I don't review. I don't give a shit."

    You are over-reacting. :)

    This sums up my feelings:

ReviewerCard Is Douchey, But Everybody Just Chill Out

The real story here is that Brad Newman [The founder of the card] got an LA Times columnist to take his dumbshit ReviewerCard seriously enough to hang moral outrage on. Really, Lazarus [the LA Times business columnist who thought this was worth writing about]: You just now figuring out that the Internet is not a place where people are honest? Does the name Lennay Kekua mean anything to you? Maybe you should stop wasting time on ReviewerCard and hang the death of ethics on—I don’t know—Esquire food critic John Mariani, who allegedly has handed business cards to restaurateurs before sitting down. Now that's a toss-pot.

Apparently Newman gave the cards out for free. If someone actually pays $100 for one, then we'd have something to discuss (on a forum devoted to scams).

I agree with both Pie Lady and Darren72; It's an awful idea that will never gain any traction.
If I was eating with you and you pull this thing out I would apologize to the waiter, leave and never eat with you again.
If I was a restaurateur and you pull this shit I'd throw you out.

From the comment field "With the simple flash of a card, everyone from the valet to the chef will know that the person sitting in their restaurant is an insecure, grasping, unethical tosser."

Or worse: you pull this card, chef smiles, and vile things get done to your eats. Sounds right to me. Syrup of ipecac, anyone?

The fact that people are embarrassed to say "I write reviews" and instead require a $100 card to say it for them, says a lot about the propriety of using the card. I would think that adding $10 to one's next 10 gratuities, would accomplish more without embarrassing oneself and pissing people off. Besides, any restaurateur that doesn't treat everybody like they write reviews in this day and age, has obviously never looked at Yelp.

You think if I printed up a card that says, "I like pie" and I flashed it with a little wink, they'd give me pie?

I have to imagine that this card was created as a spoof or joke and someone did not "get it" who was shown the card and wrote a story as though it was real. I am having a hard time imagining that anybody would actually use this card (well, there is always someone, but it would be a miniscule number who would consider this). I think I am more apt to believe Manti T'eo has a real girlfriend than that this card was created as anything other than a joke.

Yes, I think it was created as a joke to see if anyone would actually buy it, or if journalist would bite at the cheap story.
