Hi- I ran across this on Jill Cataldo's couponing blog. There is a shortage of chicken wings just in time for the Superbowl. Apparently because of the drought last summer, there was a shortage of corn, and not as many chickens were grown. Right now chicken wings are going for $2.19 a pound wholesale. That explains why McDonald's has to charge so much. BTW- Kroger's is the only store any where in the Chicago area that has chicken wings on sale right now, and they are $2.19 a pound. There are a few Kroger stores in the surrounding counties, and in the Rockford and Kankakee area. Here is a link to the article.

    Hope this helps, Nancy

Plenty of wings in my area, but close to $3 a lb. frozen flavored a little less.
personally, I have been putting out chicken legs that have been "split" by a local Hispanic store.
Cooked in a convection oven after being spiced makes the meat and skin go into a ball at the end of the bone. So you have a long "handle" with meat and skin at the end for dipping. Far less messy.

Jill's post actually says the opposite. She quotes a Baltimore Sun article titled "No Chicken Shortage":

The Baltimore Sun wrote:The sky is not falling. There is not an impending chicken wing shortage, the American Chicken Council said, and wing-eating football fans will not have to worry about having enough chicken wings.

Scattered news sources have conveyed the exact opposite message. Because it's funnier, I suppose.

But news sources apparently pounced on the follow-up statement from Bill Roenigk, chief economist and market analyst at the Washington-based chicken group. "If you're planning to cook your own wings, I wouldn't advise being in line at the supermarket two hours before kickoff."

    exvaxman--

Could you pls explain how/inwhat fashion, they're split?

    Tnx!

    Geo

PS. I've always wondered, is it "vax" as in DEC?
Sooo, you like wine and are looking for something good to read? Maybe *this* will do the trick! :)

Yes, the vax is for the good old days of VMS. Sad to think I still have my DCL and TECO skills. And no, I am NOT that old (except in the eyes of my teenager).

Wings were $2.39 at Cermak this morning. Skipped them though since I picked up a huge pork roast at save-a-lot on my way there. I did get a couple of steaks at Cermak and tons of fruit/veggies though.

I'm sorry I didn't check the forum first, I would have taken a couple of pictures.
However, the split drumsticks look like they have the whole leg bone, but 1/3 of each side has been removed exposing the flesh. They sit flat since the rounded parts have been taken off on two sides. They sell them both plain and pre-spiced. The Cermak spices are too hot for me, so I make my own far weaker and less salty adobo dry spice. I (lightly!) coat the legs, and put them into a pre-heated convection oven at 375. I have a simple rack that I use, that has a base of a standard cookie sheet to collect drippings, four (empty, cleaned) cans that are used to stand up a cookie cooling rack on each of the four legs. The rack is about the same size as the cookie sheet. The drumsticks are put in so that the (knuckle? Joint?) is pushed through the rack so that they are vertical, with the meat part above the cookie sheet. What ends up happening is that most of the legs have the remaining skin and meat sliding down to the end of the drumstick in a "ball" of meat, so that you have a long "handle" for a ball of meat at the end for dipping into sauce. No mess on your hands :)

    Hi,

While demand and prices are high, there is no shortage of chicken wings according to the Poultry Council.

No, There's No Super Bowl Chicken Wing Shortage

    ...
So while consumers will be able to get their hands on wings, they may have to pay a bit more. Petry points out that wing prices are higher than they were last year. Currently, wholesale prices are around $2.10 per pound, he says, up from around $1.85 in early 2012. Prices also tend to go up in January of every year, with football being the primary reason.

It's also worth mentioning that chicken wing freak-outs have happened plenty of times before. The nation fretted before the Super Bowl in 2009 that a shortage was going to ruin parties everywhere. In late 2009, USA Today reported on a wing shortage, then did so again in March 2010.

I suspect the sudden rise in chicken wing prices could be tied to an artificial ( and unintentional) market manipulation by a certain clown-like fast food operation who decided to add wings their their menu. It's been known to happen in the past, particularly when the same outfit decided to add cherry pies to their offerings. The cherry market was disrupted to the point that the company was persuaded to remove the item from their menu lest the rest of us be cherryless. If it were a general shortage of chickens due to the drought as alleged , then the price of ALL chicken parts (or at least breasts) would be equally high.

There was a pretty interesting article about the correlation between pork prices and the timing of the mcrib a while ago. Cheap pork = mcrib coming back.

Hi- Here is another article I ran across about the supply of chicken wings.
    http://personalmoneynetwork.com/moneybl ... -shortage/

According to this article there are 1% fewer chickens being grown right now because of the price of corn. This article says that there will be enough chicken wings to go around, because most restaurants hooked up with suppliers months ago. The price of chicken wings has definitely gone up though. They are going to be available in the grocery store but for more money. I think why wings are so expensive right now, is because they are a whole lot more popular than they used to be, and so there is a larger demand for them. They mentioned in this article that part of the reason why corn is so expensive, besides the drought, is the fact that 40% of the corn must be used in the production of ethanol.

BTW- I saw an ad for McDonald's wings today on TV, and the commercial mentioned that they are only there for a limited time. Maybe once McDonalds quits selling them the price will go down a little bit. The wings are the most expensive part of the chicken right now.

Hi- I just ran across this news story. Apparently there were 2 guys in Atlanta, that worked at a cold storage facility down there, that stole $65,000 worth of Tyson chicken wings from one of the freezers there. They were caught. Here is the link to the story.

That just shows how popular they are right now.

That's 26,000 pounds according to the article ($2.50/lb for the math-class-is-hard crowd). You don't walk out with 13 tons of poultry under your jacket, it had to have involved a semi trailer at the very least.

I'm somewhat surprised by these prices and the ones in the McDonald's chicken wings thread where someone said they shop at Pete's Fresh Market and the wings were $3.29/lb. I don't ever remember seeing wings above three bucks at a pound at my local Pete's (at 44th and Pulaski). I went today to check, and the larger bags of wings are $1.49 a pound, and the smaller, already jointed wings are $1.89/lb, either plain or seasoned.
