Very much looking forward to it, as a 'kosher-style' family (meaning we don't mix milk and meat as much as we can, at home or out, and buy kosher meat predominantly). Hopefully the concept will pull in enough folks from the neighborhood to be viable, while serving an observant Jewish audience that's largely ignored south of Devon. At the very least, it's a welcome change from another quick-serve kosher grill, or the staid, 'special occasion' feel I'd associate with Shallots.

Besides, the name is very cool.

Yes, my husband got a good chuckle from the name. What are the Jews if not perplexed? (Thank you, Ramban.)

I am already trying to organize a trip later in the month for my shul friends when we are on winter break. Stay tuned, kosher friends!

Man, I was just talking to my girlfriend (who has a few relatives who keep kosher) about how sad it is that there is no such thing as kosher BBQ. I will be interested to check this out.

I'm just happy something is finally opening in that space.... it has been abandoned for what must be nearly ten years at this point after the laundromat that used to be there went out of business.

And of course, doesn't hurt if the brisket is good!

I think the brisket has to be good. If you're opening a jewish kosher bbq place, you can't serve any pork, so that brisket had better be worth coming in for. The article linked also lamented the lack of classic bbq sides such as mac and cheese, I wonder if they are considering using dairy substitutes. I've actually had mac + cheese made with the fake daiya cheese which is pretty good, when melted its much closer to the real thing.

You obviously never visited the now closed kosher BBQ joint located next door to Shaevitz Kosher Meats in Highland Park. Amazingly, thier brisket was total crap.

No I have not. In fact, I was unaware the kosher BBQ could even exist (I am still in awe of someone trying to do bbq without pork). Also crappy brisket is probably why they closed amirite?

There's absolutely no reason Kosher bbq can't be great. Chicken, duck, brisket, short ribs, beef sausage and lamb are all excellent when cooked properly. Many traditional bbq sides can also be done on a Kosher basis (fries, slaw, greens, beans, etc.). If you've had bad Kosher bbq, blame the playa' not the game! :D

As for Now We're Cooking, their bbq was pretty bad but they did have several other items that were very good. Our office used to be nearby and I especially enjoyed their Black Bean Chicken Chili and the thick-cut french fries, both of which were excellent.

BBQ with no pork?!?! They'd better make a damn good brisket...

This will be nice when my in-laws come to visit, however. While my wife and I don't keep kosher in any way, shape or form her parents do. They will eat vegetarian/fish in any restaurant, but it'll be nice to have some meat options for them in the area and one that's not so pricey either. It's hard to come up with restaurants that aren't too expensive, have options for them other than salmon, aren't too exotic/ethnic, and aren't Italian/pasta...

Yeah, that was the name of that place. As Ronnie said, there may have been other items that were better, but the brisket was a shonda.

There is good kosher BBQ but you have to travel for it - Smokey Joes in NJ - so it is possible

Hopefully Milt's will be as good -

As for Now We're Cooking - the ribs and burgers were excellent -

Also for Kosher BBQ in skokie Ken's Diner occasionally resurrects the RIB that they had server at the now closed affiliated Bugsy's Steakhouse - which are excellent

And also as an update to my original post I am hearing they will not meet their Dec 1 opening

A friend who's been keeps telling me to post the menu, which you can find yourself on their website. I asked her how it was. She said "not bad."

Not quite the full review LTH would like, I know. I can add that she said it in a fairly positive tone of voice :)

According to Dish, the (beef) ribs they serve are braised, falling off the bone style. That's not something that inspires me to book a reservation.

I did notice on their menu you can order some of the meats. "Smoked or unsmoked". Never seen that before. Is this another BBQ place claiming you don't need to smoke the meat to call it BBQ? I'm perplexed, but may visit for research purposes.. I'll report back

Hi- Has anybody been here yet? The restaurant got a plug on TV a few days ago. It might have been on Chicago tonight. All the profits from the restaurant are donated to charity. I believe the Chicago Jewish federation. The segment also mentioned that Chicago magazine has Milt's listed as one of the best new restaurants.

    Hope this helps, Nancy

Hi- That might be where I saw them was on 190 North. BTW- I just discovered that they cancelled the program, and so Milt's was on their last show.

When I visited Milt's website, I noticed that they were closed for nine days over passover. Do all Kosher restaurants stay closed that long?
