It's funny, I'd passed this place by a couple of times in the last couple months and could have sworn that it had a recently-closed, not soon-to-be-open appearance. Was there a Chinese place in that same location previously? I know the hot dog place on the same block closed in the last year, I figured it was another closing due to Children's Memorial no longer supplying a lunch crowd.

+1 on that - we're addicted to the version that they have at Penang. Enough that's it's worth a trip to Arlington Heights from the city to get it, as well as their Beef Rendang and Coconut Rice (which doesn't have all the extras listed on Rickshaw's website, so it's more of a strict side than a dish per se). Penang's version also has red beans and corn, and I think simple syrup. We still miss the Chinatown location, which closed several years ago after a fire.

Rickshaw Republic looks closer to casual dining than Penang, but it's going to be interesting to see how their version turns out.

Yeah, I've had it at Penang too in Arlington Heights. I agree their version is really good. My girlfriend is from Malaysia and wasn't that impressed with Penang and said it was just OK. We only had about 3-4 plates though. She said the Cendol was pretty good though... but could be better still apparently (I'll take it though).

As far as this new place goes, part of their menu is actually Malaysian too but they don't say it for some reason. We'll probably be headed there in the next few days to see how it is. I'm crossing my fingers for it to be really good. Early word is that it is good, but I'll have an expert on the matter with me :)

Oh man, I miss Malaysian food (I'm from Melbourne, where it is plentiful). My kingdom for a decent curry laksa! I shall not sneeze at cendol, though. At home, you often seen the cendol 'worms' appear in che ba mau in place of the green jelly, too, making a combination of my two favourite desserts :)

Please report back about Rickshaw Republic's offerings!

Mug's Pizza in Des Plaines is finally open again, after a fire last October -- at least it didn't take the year that Kaufman's Bagels did.

My favorite thin-crust pizza in the burbs: nice crunch to the crust, very tasty sauce.

They have some affiliation to Giovanni's Pizza in Chicago and Berwyn (family, I think), and were called Mugavero's for a while before changing to Mug's (I'm guessing a combination of customers not being able to spell it, and inability to paint the whole word on a delivery car and have it readable).

The internet cafe next door (mentioned in the article) has long had some Turkish snacks and coffee. This is obviously a step up and sounds great. I'm a sucker for lahmacun, keema nan and similar meat paste/doughy delights.

Never thought I'd say this but actually pretty bummed they're closing the Cal City Leona's --one of the VERY few sit down restaurants where I could get an edible soup and salad for lunch near my client (down there 2x/week.) Ugh.

I also never thought I'd say this, but I'll SURELY miss them. Leona's in RP is about 100 yards from my house - and while most of the food is consistently poor quality - it serves it's purpose here in Rogers Park. They have this big play/movie room off the dining room, with a large movie screen and toys; everyone lets their kids hang in there while they have a pre-dinner drink and normal adult conversation. It's a great set up if you have kids. And, their chicken wings are actually pretty good - good quality meat, ok sauce, and they don't split them - which I personally like.

I will also miss Hop Haus, again, a great place to take kids - it's SO BIG, the noise of kids is never a bother - and the beer selection was good (burgers/food ok too).

You (meaning I) criticize the food of the run-of-the-mill, open 7 days a week, have a parking lot, and are good for kids places until they close - and then you remember that you can't park at, eat at, or enjoy a lot of other places with a 1 and 3 year old....especially within walking distance of my house

    RIP Leonas RP

PS - it's for sale for 2.7 million - look for an olive garden or Red Lobster to replace it, nothing "cool" has deep enough pockets for this space
I love comfortable food, and comfortable restaurants.

Oh man that's awesome. I love more Turkish places opening! Lahmacun is awesome. Now only if someone would open a Pizzabulls from Istanbul, ha ha jk.

Going to check this place out. I have heard Troy in Lakeview has good Lahmacun too, but haven't tried it yet.

Looks like Jury's on Lincoln has had a name change at the very least, with signage indicating "Copper House", with grand opening festivities occuring this weekend. Had been on a slow but steady decline since ownership change in 2011 so perhaps a revamping was in order...did not stop in but sure we will get in there shortly.

I am still on the e-mail list from Jury's, so there have been several items since the first ownership change. One indicated that they had gone back to their old burgers. Another dated October 29, 2012, indicated that there was new management and various changes would be coming. Apparently there has been some remodeling as well as staff and menu changes. In early January they said there would be a grand reopening in February with new name and new concept and during January would have sneak previews of some of the new items while keeping some old Jury's favorites.

From January 12 e-mail announcing Copper House name:
    New Name, Same Idea
Our mission to become your second home

When we were thinking about what our name should be, we realized we were really thinking what should it MEAN? We decided we needed to think more about our goals, our guest needs, and our place in the community. Our first goal is to become a part of your family and more than just a place to grab a bite. We want to become the local hangout for you to meet up with your best friend and share a bottle of wine after a rough day at work. A place to relax with your family and discuss what is going on in school or the next big dance. We want you to celebrate big moments with your friends and our specialty cocktails. Make memories when you try something new with our beer flights while watching the game. We want to become your home away from home.

Our second goal is to up our game and become more polished. Going out to eat is more than just food - it's about the experience. We have painted, added decoration, and even took down a wall for a more modern but comfortable look. Our staff goals are for you to leave full, happy, and with good memories. You will see familiar faces like Chef Nando and Oscar but also new friendly staff, all who are committed to providing you with the best experience from the moment you step foot into our establishment to the moment you walk out the door.

So when we realized what we wanted to become - a second home with a polished look - the name became a little bit easier. We are so excited to share our new logo with you!!

A more recent e-mail indicated grand reopening the weekend of February 1 to 3. The web site can be reached using jurysrestaurant.com.

The whole string has not induced me to give them a try as some things seem kind of scattershot. But then maybe the business about having one of the new owners say they wouldn't be changing a thing after the first ownership change and then changing a bunch of things including messing up the burgers has me a little leery. I have not eaten there since a few months after the first management change.

That's all very nice, but how does the name Copper House achieve any of that?

Or, more to the point, what in God's name is making them think that the name Copper House is achieving any of that?
