Matsumoto to Milwaukee Pizza Hut in 24-hours

From the sublime to the ridiculous, last night Matsumoto for Kaiseki, tonight Pizza Hut delivery.

Pizza Hut 1/2-anchovy/1/2-peperoni


Ok, maybe not ridiculous as Pizza Hut is my 95-year-old grandmother's pizza of choice and, after all, it was her birthday. I hoped to take her to Bacchus , but fully realized she may not be up for an excursion. On the occasions we have lunch or dinner plans, and she is not up to snuff, I pick up from Benji's, a Jewish deli in her area. Good rye bread, decent pickle, corned beef and soup, mediocre pastrami and cans of Heinz vegetarian beans, but tonight she was in the mood for pizza.

There's a perfectly reasonable pizza place in her area, Calderone Club, but the once or twice I've suggested Calderone she happily demurs, then eats only a bite or two. Pizza Hut pizza w/anchovy rocks, at least for my grandmother.

We had cake my grandmother's health care assistant picked up at Sentry, think Jewel, but Milwaukee. The marble cake was dry, mostly flavorless and, the icing on the cake, so to speak, was an inch of frosting much as BJT describes here

All in all it was a wonderful evening, my grandmother, after a couple of slices of her beloved Pizza Hut, really perked up, and when she blew out the candles on the cake her happy smile brought a tear to my eye.

P.S. Actually, it sounds like that pizza was exactly the right thing to eat on the occasion. First Olive Garage, then Pizza Gut; you're a better grandson than I could have been under the circumstances.

Yes, of course. And the flour was "00 Pizzeria Flour" milled by Molino Caputo in Naples Bill/SFNM uses on his pizzas.

Kidding aside, my grandmother is still talking about her birthday anchovy pizza. Not so much the cake though.

I gotta disagree with your characterization of Calderone Club as "perfectly reasonable". On my one trip to the downtown location of this establishment, Calderone Club's pie, characterized by a surpassingly thin, crisp crust, a well-balanced if somewhat reticent sauce, good-quality cheese and an excellent, pungent fennel sausage, was quite delicious. To these taste buds at least, it was more palatable than the good-but-not-great pie offered by Zaffiro's. Admittedly, though, I have only made one trip to Zaffiro's and plan to return to sample its pizza again and immerse myself in its amazingly enjoyable throwback atmosphere. Possibly upon a repeated tasting Zaffiro's will rise above CC--such a feat would be welcome, and in my estimation, no small one at that. If I may ask, what do you find wanting in the CC pizza? And do you have a favorite Milwaukee-area custard stand?

Disagree, about pizza, unprecedented.

Perfectly reasonable is by no means a slam, enjoyable, but no need to go rushing back. I should also point out I have only had takeout/delivery from the Port Washington location, never been to the downtown location.

Seems appropriate to trot out my well-worn we all like something different, that's why Baskin Robin's makes 31-flavors though I'm thinking of switching to if we all liked the same thing, everyone would want to marry my wife

I was born and raised in Milwaukee, been eating Zaffiro's since I was knee-high to a grasshopper and it's, without question, my favorite pizza. It's not simply a matter of nostalgia, as kids we had Mama Mia's, both eat-in and take-out, regularly and that pizza now leaves me cold.
