I think there's one in Schaumburg or Hoffman Estates, but are any closer to my home?

As far as I am aware of, there are no Vietnamese restaurants in McHenry Co. There is a pretty good Thai place - Krystal Thai that is located on Northwest Highway adjacent to the TJ Maxx store.

The two that I am most familiar with, but have not tried are:

    Pho U
    23 E Dundee Rd
    Buffalo Grove, IL 60089
    (847) 353-3333

    Tô Pho
    823 E Algonquin Rd
    Schaumburg, IL 60173
    (847) 348-7778

Honestly, when I am in the mood for Vietnamese food, I head to Argyle St. in Chicago.

Having moved from the Edgewater area and it's proximity to Argyle street to the NW suburbs I have been searching for a Vietnamese restaurant for some time.

The absolute closest to LITH will be Happy Buddha in Barrington. Note that this is vegetarian only. I have not tried it:

    207 W. Northwest Hwy, # A
    Barrington, IL 60010

If you are in the mood for Pho or more traditional Vietnamese, House of Pho is your best bet. I have been there twice and would say it's good but not a standout.

    House of Pho
    1004 W. Golf Road
    Hoffman Estates, IL 60169

I will second the Krystal Thai recommendation and add another in the opposite direction in Elgin. It goes variously by "Your Second Home Thai Restaurant" or Toom Toom Thai. Good Thai food, a lot of noodle soup choices (not Pho, but good) and very friendly service:

Toom Toom Thai (AKA Your Second Home Thai Restaurant)
    23 S Grove Ave
    Elgin, IL 60120

you can also check out 'Asian Noodle House' in Hoffman Estates which has PHO and relatively cheap and pretty good:

    Hoffman Estates, IL 60194

Good to hear that! I went shortly after they opened and thought it was awful, but it's been a while and I've been looking for good Thai around here. The place that was in that location was pretty good and I was really disappointed when they closed.

I also live in LITH, and the closest you will find is Hoffman/Schaumburg.
    Here's just my opinion:
-Asian Noodle House in Hoffman is good, always feels a tad grimy to me. It's always packed with Asian people, and the food is good. there is an element of feeling rushed out quickly.
-House of Pho on Golf Rd in Hoffman Estates, we love them. Its a restaurant run by two charming women. The food is tasty, it's always busy, and we just love it. Great food IMHO.
-Tô Pho in Schaumburg - from what i understand is owned in part, by the same women from House of Pho. And it was excellent. Great food and service, we will be back!'

But unfortunately, our area is seriously lacking in ethnic, fun restaurants!

Now that you mentioned it, I did eat at Happy Buddha last fall.

I thought that the food that I had - Vietnamese Vegetarian Hue style vermicelli soup - was pretty good.

The service was attentive which would be expected at 2 pm on a Saturday afternoon. The people were very friendly.

    I would go back again.

Thanks. It's getting better out here, but there is a serious lack of decent ethnic options.

It's in the other direction (Dekalb) but Bea's Wok and Roll is very good. Small operation, somewhat odd hours but the food is fresh and very good.

    1402 Sycamore Rd
    Dekalb, IL 60115

This reminds me of a discussion that I have with my brother in Cincinnati. His favorite place is a Thai/Chinese/Sushi place that opened a couple of years ago. Honestly, the food is OK but there is nothing spectacular. They offer THREE cuisines as there is just not enough interest in any ONE of the cuisines to stay in business.

It is hard for many to get excited about some of the pretty generic Chinese restaurants in McHenry Co. when you can to dozens of Chinatown places within 75 minutes.
