Many GNRs have dishes that you should stay far away from. Regardless, although my enthusiasm has tempered a bit, I still think this is a more than solid place that I would never hesitate to recommend.

I've tried every sandwich on their menu now, so I think I have a good grasp of the menu.

If you like meat, get pork as your protein. It's their tastiest meat, so tender and they pile plenty of it in the sandwich. The bread they use is really perfect for soaking up the curry sauces and holds up well with all the other ingredients.

If you're vegetarian, I would stick to the fig paneer sandwich, which is great. I just don't care for the seitan they use in other sandwiches.

Also - try the pomegranate lemonade! They make it themselves and it's really tasty.

Here's my latest sandwich, a Singapore Tikka sandwich, with pork:

stopped by for an early lunch 11:10am.

Ordered the #6 Spice Grill - Pork w/eggplant, tamarind, onions.
If there was eggplant, tamarind, onions on my sandwich, they must have been hiding.

Pork was very wet and I observed the sandwich maker putting some liquid/sauce on my sandwich with a small ladle.

My sandwich was wet from the get go, which might not be a bad thing (as in the case of a wet Italian Beef) but wasn't the expectation I had. The addition of sirachia to my sandwich made it much better.

    Slaw was very enjoyable.

Upon exiting, I was asked how I liked my sandwich. I stated it was good but very wet. He made the comment that they are trying for an Asian Italian beef style sandwich. He suggested I try the #4 Indonesian Ginger BBQ sandwich, as it is their #1 seller.

I think that if I temper my expectation on texture (wet instead of crisp), ingredients (not a lot of eggplant, tamarind, onions but LOTS of slivered carrots & branches of cilantro), I would have enjoyed the sandwich more. I did however expect more of a Banh mi experience.

Some comparisons have been made to Zenwich in Elmhurst and Evanston's Soulwich. No comparison in my book, Zenwich is superior. This said, I have no doubt that if I lived/worked local to Soulwich, it would be in my regular rotation.

I did absolutely nothing and it was everything I thought it could be.

Well, if a sandwich shop is committed to only serving bread baked the same day and doesn't want to have a lot of waste, this is a possibility.

A shop that will use yesterday's bread for today's sandwiches wouldn't have this problem.

I don't know if this is the case at Soulwich.

I believe the rolls are delivered every morning -- or at least they used to be. For what it's worth, I think almost all of their business comes during lunch hours; I almost never see anyone there after 6 or so and the staff seems down to one person.

None of which helps you if you show up during posted hours and are told they basically don't have any food for you, but there you go.

By the way, if you do make it here and they actually have bread, make sure to request the house-made green chili condiment (not listed, sometimes not available) on your sandwich. Much better than sriracha.
