When it comes to the Edison Park neighborhood of Chicago (my home), Conca D'Oro Bakery is still the best Italian bakery in the area. The owner, Juliette, is one of the nicest people you will ever meet, and she genuinely loves what she does for a living. Thankfully, for the rest of us, that means making some of the best homemade Italian food in the area. Her cannolis are only filled to order, and her pastries are always excellent. And her bakery style pizza with homemade Italian sausage is some of the best bakery pizza you will have anywhere.

But as good as Juliette's pastries are, her homemade meals on Saturday are truly the best. On any given Saturday, my wife will stop in, say hello, and walk away with Juliette's chicken with spinach/Italian seasonings (two orders), pork chop (two orders) with sweet peppers and roasted red peppers, a stuffed artichoke, AND her pasta with olive oil, seasonings, and broccoli for a mere $20.00. $20.00!!!!!!!!!! And when it comes to quality, nothing compares to Juliette's homemade meals. Perfection.

Personally, I have always recommended the place.

Actually, though, I like Tony's subs next door a bit more.

@jlawrence01: Usually, I hit both Conca D'Oro AND Tony's on the same day, but for different items. When it comes to the fresh homemade meals on Saturdays, I always go to Conca D'Oro. Same goes for Conca's bakery style pizza. But then I'll go next door to get the pasta salad from Tony's which is probably the best pasta salad I've ever had anywhere. I've yet to find pasta salad as good as Tony's. It's great having both places in my backyard. I'm truly spoiled.

Yep. For me it's a sub or muffaletta sandwich at Tony's and the great bakery pizza next door to take home.

The chow Poodle is a big fan of her biscotti and pignoli.

We met Juliette awhile ago when we stopped by Tony's for a couple of subs and some cheese to go. Iced lemon cookies are my favorites, so I bought a couple (at half of downtown prices), stepped outside and took a bite. Instant joy followed--a slight softness, lemony, not too sweet--just perfect.

About face! Followed by a bigger purchase and a treat of a chat with Juliette (those lemon cookies are her son's favorites). The Saturday to-go foods were almost gone and two neighborhood women had just entered with large plastic containers, so we're looking forward to getting back earlier on a Saturday and picking up some lasagna and chicken (really whatever's there) for a Saturday night spread.
