Watched Elmwood Park's own Sandwich King eating at Ricobenes. Gave me a big hankering for a breaded steak sandwich, but I definatly do not want the "Tribune on a roll" from Chicago's iconic home of the breaded steak sammy. They actually were decent 20 years ago.
A little bridgeport shop at 32d and May called La Milenese sevrved one of the greatest sandwiches of all time. Steak was crispy, two huge pieces, bountifull cheese and two kinds of giardinare. Couldn't take it to go, couldn't eat in the car, you needed 8 napkins. The whole family seemed to work in the open kitchen. Sadly its now gone. Actually its been a while.
But there is an chance. I was told by a "bridgeport guy" that the man who appeared to be the son at LA M has opened up a new sandwich shop somewhere on the near southside. Could this be true? Is it the manna of my memory? Is it an acceptable rendition?
If the fantasy is simply that, does anyone have a recommendation for an alternative?
