Magazines for the IncarceratedFew months ago, I briefly put up a request for old magazines -- specifically food magazines -- that would be conveyed to a local house of detention where incarcerated ladies would, I assured readers, treasure them as they waited, year after year, for a court date, conviction, sentencing....or release.
I quickly had to take the post down at the request of the institution, and so without naming that institution, I'm asking again for such donations. And it doesn't have to be just food-related periodicals. I asked the sad ladies today (sad on account of Mother's Day) what kind of magazines they'd like to see and they added Glamour, National Geographic and Time to the list.
Really, any kind of magazine is fine: the ladies actually spend serious time pouring over Costco Connection.
So thanks to pairs4life, Gypsy Boy, and so many others who gave and who I, at 3AM, am not able to remember. Unloading those magazines may allow you to rid yourself of an albatross, but for those who receive them, it's an incredible treasure, and it's not hard to see why. Imagine yourself locked up all day every day with only the stupidest television and without anything you want to read. These periodicals about food and clothing and normal life are, in a very real way, a connection to a world they want to get back to or a world they will never see again.
My address is 205 S. Scoville, Oak Park. You can drop off mags any time; we have a protected front porch so they won't get wet in case of rain. You can email me first if you like (
David@DCHammond.com), but it's not necessary. If you'd rather not drive to Oak Park, I might be able to get them when I'm in your hood, or we can do an exchange at the picnic or even the holiday party. This is not a need that is ever fully satisfied, but the effort to do so is vastly, deeply and continually appreciated.
Thanks.
