Lunch @ the Federal Court House?

2-3 wks of jury duty @ 219 S Dearborn. This even after I said I was left of center politically during the juror interview. Went to Cafecito today but where else to eat?

Options not great, but Hannah's Bretzel at 131 S Dearborn is solid but expensive. Could do a lot worse than Berghoff cafe for a roast beef sandwich, I Dream of Falafel or Chase building cafe (frontera fresco or the salad station) are close enough. Rosebud Prime or Grill Room for a steak salad if you want something nicer.

Good coffee & tea across the street at Intelligentsia. I heard the one on Broadway is sourcing food from GNR Floriole so you are in luck if they are doing the same at Intelligentsia in rhw Monadnock building across the street.

Farmer's Market is on Tuesdays, I think.

Fresh juice at Kramer's on Wabash.

Decent bar at Binyon's.

If I think of others I will let you know, but that end doesn't beckon me.

I'm glad you are serving. Jury service is one of the most important acts of citizenship.

Fontano's is still across from DePaul on Jackson--ate there at least 3x /wk all thru law school. I always liked their turkey sub with hot giard (or was it the very cute Italian boys who worked there...hmmm)

Millers Pub isn't far.

A note about Intelligensia: you can't take your coffee through security into the courthouse. I learned that the hard way. I had to make the saddest puppy dog eyes ever and drop a judge's name in order to keep my $$ drink.

I technically work in the Kluczynski Building but I'm hardly there anymore.

Chicken Planet (a bit of a walk to Wells / Van Buren) is decent and incredibly cheap, provided you like grilled chicken.

Oasis Cafe (21 N Wabash) is always a good place to hit for Middle Eastern.

Halo Asian Mix (29 E Adams) has Hawaiian, Filipino, Chinese, and Japanese (I've only tried offerings from the first two categories).

If you want to stuff yourself with sole, get a fried fish "sandwich" (more like a pound of lightly-battered sole on a plate with a sesame seed bun thrown on for garnish) at Cellar's Market in the basement of the CBOT (Lasalle / Jackson). They also have a decent chicken pot pie on Thursdays.

A little bit of a hike, but the new Ba Le spot (166 W Washington) has pretty good banh mi. Better than Banh Mi Express (105 W Madison) which is hidden in a soulless basement food court.

And because it's nearby, I'll mention Cavanaugh's in the Monandock. Meh.

Those are my stompin grounds as well. Too bad you missed Cal's. I would have met you for a drink after court. Ask PIGMON too, as this was once his territory. You could do worse then Greek diner fare and a stiff drink served by a swell Balkan staff at Ceres in the BOT. The same fish "sandwich" described upthread is in the offing here. Miller's Pub, vastly underappreciated. Lake perch, lamb burger, etc. Abu Andre is the new Beirut-based chain. The nearby outlet might be the first in the US. Gage is not too terribly far. Berghoff is what it is and is as close as possible. Not Elephant & Castle, IMO. If you like cigars, Jack Schwartz in the BOT is a treasure.

Ba Le has a loop outpost at 166 W. Washington. It's more expensive than Uptown, but it's still good.

Fontano's moved to 332 S Michicgan Ave a while ago. Nicer interior and more inviting for a dine-in experience.

CBOT has 2 restaurants - downstairs in Cellars Market, a large food court/cafeteria with a number of stations and different specials everyday. On the main floor is Ceres which is a sit-down and order from the server version (and home of the bar with some of the stronger cocktails one will find). Both are managed by the same group.

I like the Buffalo chicken sandwich at Cavanaugh's, which is very close to the Dirksen building. Cross Jackson and it's across the alley from the side entrance to the Union League Club.

Interesting--the Jackson location is still on the website--and for my 27 y/o self many eons ago, that location was just perfect for dine-in--but then again, what I enjoyed then (good eye candy) is a far cry from what I'd enjoy now (comfortable seating and a reasonable noise level )

One close and great option that's been missed is Cafecito at 20 East Congress. Just a few blocks for some of the best Latin sandwiches in town.

A new asian / latin fusion place called Saucy Porka opened recently on Financial place just south of Van Buren.

I've been a couple of times now, once for breakfast, once for lunch. Some menu items worked better for me than others. I really liked the chorizo egg rolls & all three of the bahn mi sandwiches that I tried (chorizo & egg, carnitas, short ribs), was not as much a fan of the "bacos" (bao tacos).

Interesting little place, worth checking out.
