Lincoln Square - encompassing Bud Long Woods and Andersonville, and adjacent to Albany Park - is a bit of a culinary crossroads. Although it got its start in pickles, now it's home to board favorites like Da Rae Jung, Jimmy's Pizza, Monti's and Nhu Lan. So I'd like to propose an occasional Friday lunch group, for those of us lucky to be in the area.

Lincoln Square - not just for pickles anymore!

First lunch, Friday, May 31st at noon

    Rainbow Thai
    4825 N Western Ave
    (773) 754-7660

    1. lemoneater
    2. bean
    3. Santander
    4. Cabbagehead
    5. FrankP
    6. Vinny

    Waitlist

"To get long" meant to make do, to make well of whatever we had; it was about having a long view, which was endurance, and a long heart, which was hope.

6/1 is a Saturday. Did you mean 5/31?

Pencil me in for this. The end of the month is often a difficult time for me, but I'd love to try Rainbow Thai and this seems to be a prime opportunity.

I work from home and live in East Lakeview, so I'd love to see a northside weekday lunch group gain traction. (It's always nice to have an excuse to get out of the house during the day...) I already have plans to go to Rainbow the first week in June and the last week in May is hectic, so I may sit this one out but would definitely be interested in other lunches. I'll update in ~ a week if I'm able to attend.

I should have a flexible Friday and would be happy to help with the ordering power. Count me in, and I'll update next week if things change (or if a bunch of locals are knocking on the waitlist, in which case I'll step aside).

It's Friday, and I bet you wish you had lunch plans with interesting pals that like to share delicious food. Well, plan ahead for next week. There are still 2 spots left for this event at Rainbow Thai!

Just wanted to confirm that I cannot make it tomorrow, but I would welcome the chance to participate in further north side lunch events.

Thanks to lemoneater for organizing the friendly meal today. That tiny passthrough space really does remind me of the original Katy's in a positive way. More comments to come in the main thread, but the dried beef, shrimp salad, and fried chicken were as good as I've ever had those dishes across many spots in a few states.

That's great to hear that I'm not the only fan of the dried beef. I think i mentioned it in the main thread, that it's not so much a "beef jerky" but more like a tender marinated steak, although looking at a cross section you can see the dried edges. I loved it and thought it would make a great bar food.

They used to serve a similar sounding dish at the long-since-gone Siam Square in Evanston, and it was awesome. I'll definitely have to try this out next time I'm at Rainbow.

There's a recipe for that in David Thomson's book that sounds delicious but I haven't had a chance to try.

Thanks again to Marcella for organizing this event. The food and company were stellar! The folks at Rainbow were so warm and welcoming I will not hesitate to return. I think this group is a great idea. My only regret is that I can't make the next meeting. I'm working now on the design for the cards.

    Thanks again, folks.
