Yesterday, I redeemed my Groupon for the Best Place Milwaukee at the Historical Pabst Brewery. It was an interesting hour. However, it is NOT a tour of the Pabst Mansion and it is NOT a tour of the shuttered brewery which has been largely redeveloped.

What you get is an hour presentation on the history of beer in Milwaukee with an emphasis on the Pabst Brewery. It also includes a tour of the old corporate offices and a view of some of the memorabilia that was left when they closed the plant.

For the price, it is an interesting way to spend an hour or two. Make sure that you do a walk through of the adjacent hotel. If you head up to the second floor, you can see the original copper kettles.

If any of y'all are in Milwaukee Sept. 21 and 22, both the Best Place and the Brewhouse Inn & Suites are on the list of participating locations for this year's Doors Open Milwaukee event, and it will be free. If you're interested in architecture and history by all means come up and make a weekend of it. We'll be rid of the plague of noisy motorcycles by then.

http://doorsopenmilwaukee.org/event-guide/in-depth-tours/ -- check back before September on the last two links, they'll be adding more locations. Last year there was a two hour in-depth eating tour of Brady Street. If something similar's on this year's bill, you'll want to start standing in the free ticket line an hour or two early (or join the Historic Milwaukee organization and get an early first crack at tickets), that tour filled up quickly in '12.

Some of those events look really cool. How do you score tickets or is it a "first come, first serve" deal??

I am not as interested in the food tour as much as the various manufacturing tours that are RARELY offered to the public.

If this is anything like Open House Chicago, this is a real treat. However it won;t be for me this year, this is the same weekend as the Corn symposium and a certain LTHforum picnic I would not miss for the world.

Last September's in-depth tour tickets were handed out inside Milwaukee City Hall beginning at 9AM on Saturday and each person in line was allowed up to two tickets to up to two separate events if I'm remembering that correctly. I got in line around 8:25 with maybe 100 or 150 people in front of me, and by the time I got to the table only two or three tours had "sold" out. "Living in a Hotel" with local celeb John McGivern and the Brady Street food tour were the first ones to fill up. Anything that's not on the in-depth page, you just show up.

I'm looking forward to seeing one or two of the industrial tours, myself.
