Anything like LTH in NYC?

Three years ago I moved from Chicago to New York City. While in Chicago, I was an avid reader (lurker, mainly) of LTH Forum and discovered many wonderful places from the people on this board.

In this last few years, I've casually read Chowhound, Eater, Grub Street, and Midtown Lunch in a vain attempt to recreate the magic of LTH Forum in New York. None come close to matching the depth of knowledge and quality of content of LTH.

Does anyone have other suggestions for food-related boards in the New York area? What do you read when you're headed out this way?

Seriously, it's a great forum to build NYC knowledge. I've been (half-assedly) trying for a year now. I hope to ramp it up in the future. The more contributions, the better!

Also, the Village Voice usually has good recs, I really like Sietsema's taste, although his writing is getting a bit tired. Also, like many New Yorkers, he seems way too convinced that NYC is the culinary pinnacle of US dining.

I guess I was waiting for something like this to use as an opportunity to make my first post. I moved to NYC from Chicago almost a year ago and I still check LTH everyday. Like Habibi said there are sometimes NYC-centric threads on the Beyond Chicagoland board that are helpful and interesting (and Sietsma is also my preferred food critic).

Aside from what's already been mentioned I check Serious Eats regularly; while some days are dull every once in a while they go somewhere that excites me, for example Henan Flavor was a great experience. Also you may have read some posts by Lau on Chowhound, they also have a blog http://www.lauhound.com where they review (mostly Chinese) meals they've eaten around the city (mostly LES/Chinatown and Queens.)

Also I think there are probably more NYC LTHers than you think and this is a good excuse for us (me) to post more because obviously it will be appreciated.

I've been in NYC for three years now and I, too, check in at LTH just about every day. I subscribe to the print version of Time Out NY, which has a fairly comprehensive rundown of new places. Online, Tasting Table sends out an informative daily newsletter that keeps up with food trends, openings and closings. Lately, much of the action is in Brooklyn, which is fine with me because that's where I live.
But no, I've found nothing like LTH in NYC.

I read Serious Eats pretty regularly, though the cataloging of burgers and pizza isn't my thing, there are a lot of good cooking ideas and tips, plus some interesting other stuff - through them, I found a place for my brother (who's in Manhattan) that does dry chili beef possibly comparable to the stuff he craves from Lao Szechuan.

I agree that there are a lot of LTHers in NYC - though, a point to be made is that there's not really a good way to subdivide the "Beyond Chicagoland" board into an events board and NYC events on the LTH board will be difficult to keep track of, even if there is a group of ready and willing eaters. Maybe something for LTH in the future...

While it might not be practical to start an lth NYC board, it would be a service if someone were to create an index of NYC posts. I had put some time into compiling a New England index, but never finished it. Seems like having a way to scan the regional posts other than searching might spark more posts from those based in NYC.

What I really missed in my stays in NYC was our Events board. While words are nice, toasts are even better.

eGullet.com is what many NY'ers use, but the traffic there has slowed a lot in the last couple of years.

This is exciting news, indeed! If something like a NYC-themed board/index arises, I'll be happy to contribute ideas, content, or help with it. My wife and I have spent a lot of time digging up hidden gems in the Five Boroughs and, while we may not have yet found Tony's Three Chili Chicken out this way, we've discovered some great places that others would enjoy.

Count me as another person excited about this idea. I'd love to be able to contribute some of the discoveries that I've made while living around NYC for the past years.

I miss the LTH get-togethers the most. It looks like we're starting to build enough critical mass to plan an outing in NYC?

I recently moved from the Chicagoland area to northern New Jersey and was wondering if anyone new of similar sites to LTH for the New York/Northern New Jersey area? This site has been great a great resource and I will miss all of Chicago's hidden gems so was hoping there was something similar out her. Thanks!
