Okay, Old Fashioned is the gold standard and occasionally life does lead down the Bishop Ford to points due south. But that's a lot of miles to travel for greatness...and I was wondering if there was perhaps near-greatness on the northside and points due north. I'm not looking for puffy glazed dough with apple pie filling (talkin' to you Spunky Dunkers!) or something called an apple fritter but unrecognizable as such (Bennison's!) but the undisputed truth...with apples, cinammon, crunch, heft and tear-apart goodness. Wheeling Donuts has the right idea but it's the runt of the litter to Old Fashioned's mama. Any suggestions?

As much as I like OFD and their apple fritter, my last couple of visits have left me wanting for a little more in the way of apple. The apple fritter at Glazed and Infused impressed me quite a bit, maybe the best in town -- just the right density and it didn't leave me wanting for more apple -- but they don't always offer it so you'll have to check with them.

It's outside the City quite a ways, but I'm a big fan of the apple fritters from Roll-N-Donut in Elgin. It's not those abominations that are glazed donuts with apple goo in them. It's fried, crispy, chunks of apples, not overly glazed.

^^^^^^^. I just ate Glazed & Infused's apple fritter and while I've not had OFD's apple fritter in a few years, I found Glazed & Infused's fritter lacking in apple flavor and unremarkable.

Maybe if you drop your head and look upside down, OFD will be on the north side.

Do-Rite donuts has a pretty decent fritter as one of their daily specials.

    Hi,

On a Cook's Country episode, they made some pretty good looking apple fritters. You may find an adaptation of their recipe here.

Just added it to my reading list for whenever the ice cream releases me.
