What's the name of the Chicago-produced chili that used to be sold at Sam's Club? It was (is?) the best canned chili I've ever had...you could fool somebody into thinking it was homemade, it was that good. Is it still available elsewhere?

Answered my own question...Randolph Street Chili (Vanee Foods). Emailed the company to find out where it's currently being sold. Will update when I learn more.

A few years ago, I called Vanee Foods to find out where I could buy their terrific canned Sloppy Joe's. They told me to try GFC. I did, they had it and I have been buying it there every year for our annual basketball tournament. GFC has a terrific selection of Vanee Food products on their shelves. They may not display the Vanee name (I cannot remember the house name), but they all have a similar name and appearance. Next time out, I'll try the chili.

I said GFC. I meant GFS, Gorden Food Service stores.

Thanks thick for the tip! By coincidence, I live near a GFS so I went there and found a Vanee's "Chili Kit" in two cans...everything but the ground beef. Not exactly what I was looking for. On another shelf, however, I found the GFS store label Hearthstone Chili Con Carne, which looks suspiciously like the chili in the pix above. Haven't opened it yet but when I do, I'll let you know if this is Vanee's in store label disguise!

Sadly, GFS store label Hearthstone Chili Con Carne is NOT Randolph Street Chili. I returned it to GFS and since they have a vendor relationship with Vanee's, they were going to inquire into purchasing a case for me. It's that kind of store...great personal service. Haven't heard from them yet but I'll forward whatever info I receive.

Michael Vanee was kind enough to return my call regarding Randolph Street Chili. It turns out that Vanee made the chili exclusively for Sam's Club and when they chose to no longer carry it (undoubtedly because of pressure from Hormel and Stagg), they stopped making it. He did mention that the chili kit available at GFS is excellent and if I didn't think so, to give him a call and he would return my money. Fair enough. I'll try it this Labor Day weekend.

I ran across the Vanee chili kit at GFS the other day. I'm very curious to see what you think about it, I was awfully tempted to try it.

This posting has my interest a bit too as I find the exact 2-can chili kit here at my downstate GFS store. I was hoping it was a small can, the two 46 oz "kit" is a lot of chili if it's "just canned chili" in the end. What to do...what to do? :)
D.G. Sullivan's, "we're a little bit Irish, and a whole lot of fun"!

Finally tried the Chili Kit...and it's as close to homemade as you can get! Just add 2-3 pounds of ground beef and it makes about two crock pot's worth of chili. You can cook it in a sauce pan but I like fooling myself! A little spicy but not too...so if you want some heat, you'll have to season to taste. I froze what was left which was a lot. All in all, an excellent product!
