So I've been hitting up Tixteco pretty regularly since they opened this spring. They're in the old Papi's Sandwich/Pollo Andino space on Milwaukee at Keystone. I live across the street and this location has been somewhat of a dead-zone for restaurants - most of the previous places have been pretty inconsistent in food quality.
Tixteco is a pretty run of the mill taqueria, but what they lack in flair they completely make up for in quality. Everything is fresh. Crazy fresh. and there is an attention to detail that most places don't even bother with. For example: the raw onion that are served on the tacos are always de-fired (i.e. they're soaked in water for a short amount of time to mellow the harshness of raw onion). The tacos are flavorful (they do them traditionally or "American"). Other traditional items - gorditas, enchiladas, borritos - are seasoned just right and put together on the spot. Nothing sits around all day like at some places. They have daily specials that are a cut above the rest - Tuesday's chicken mole is a particular standout.
There are some other places that I don't want to name on that same stretch of Milwaukee, where the quality has slid considerably in the last 3 to 4 years. Tixteco is picking up the slack and then some where these other places have dropped the ball. I'm completely excited that their business has made it through the summer because I am completely addicted to the food. I'm thinking they may be a great candidate for a GNR next year!
