Pizza and a Diner in Irving Park

What's a good pizza place near Irving and Kimball that we can use as payment for friends helping us move? I know about Marie's but was wondering if there were other good options nearby.

On another note, what's a good all-purpose diner in that area, preferably within walking distance? Other than Golden Nugget, that is.

I don't know about pizza, but both Smoque and Sabitinos are close by. Someone who helps you move deserves more than pizza.

Well...we were offering beer too...and gratitude...

When we are looking for a break from Marie's, we sometimes order from Pete's Pizza #2. It's no Marie's but it's decent in a pinch.

For a diner, try Alps at Elston and Irving.

I actually prefer Sano's (Lawrence/Elston) to Marie's. They have a great homemade sausage and a neat Faulds gas oven in the window.

I've also heard some good things about Golden Crust at Kedzie and Wilson, but mostly about the beer.

Maybe a little too far East, but I'd 2nd the Pete's nomination (Location go to is at Western and Grace).

For a diner, I'd recommend Danny's Egg Head Diner. Can always get a seat, well prepared food, friendly staff: it hits all my requirements for a diner. Just west on Irving at Damen and Lincoln.

Danny's looks fabulous. I can't wait until we're there so I can find an excuse to go to breakfast.

Do there happen to be any diners that also do dinner? I see the Alps is breakfast/lunch only too.

Also, Alps' menu looks exactly like Sally's on Harlem & Higgins. Does anyone know if they are related? It would be nice to know that Sally's is going to be the same distance away with a new title.

Interesting coincidence; the Alps I recommend above was formerly known as Alps West. Danny's is in the former location of Alps East. The bloody saga of the Alps: West vs. East, was for some time horribile dictu.

I'm 99.9% sure they are not related, but that same menu can be found in countless Greek diners all over the city in one form or another.

That would be a nice coincidence. I love Sally's, and miss both their red-eye hours and the host, who I think may have made reservations to that restaurant in the sky.

I don't mean the menu items, I mean the font, the blocked color scheme, even some of the pictures. When we get in there, I'll be sure to ask and report back.

So, I exaggerate; however, the last time I went to Alps East, I was basically told to leave for my impertinence upon asking them whether they were still related to Alps West. My Mom went to Alvernia, a girls Catholic high school, which was once nearby. All the students were forbidden to visit Alps (West). We plan to go sometime soon, because now she can go without suffering any consequences.

Around the corner, on Lincoln, there's the Lincoln Restaurant. They serve all the diner classics in a classic setting. Nothing extraordinary, just diner food (and some booze). Be aware that they have college of complexes meetings and live comedy shows on weekend nights. There's also a Banjo Night (free) on Monday evenings.
