I thought it would be fun to start a thread to catalog the constant barrage of trends in the food industry's perpetual quest for the Next Big Thing. Most food fads are ridiculous and fleeting, but some show a stroke of culinary genius, creativity, and serious potential for staying power.

I’ll go first: the ramen burger is the new cronut. At least in NYC. So far.

    Read about it here: http://www.nypost.com/p/entertainment/food/patty_meltdown_zyP6jiYGkCYrGS2DcYdidO

Evidently someone thought a compressed ramen patty would make a good hamburger bun. And other people want to wait in line for it, in the morning no less. I'll withhold judgment because, in full disclosure, I haven't even tried a cronut yet.

Actually, I think historically it's the other way around; cupcakes are the new pie.

I don't remember an explosion of pie. But if there was, there should be a comeback with the opening of more shops.

I'm sure it was before your time, like back in the 30's. It's still happening in many pars of the country...just not here because we have cupcakes and cronuts.

Where can you get mead? I bought some for our honeymoon (Schaefer's in Skokie) and haven't seen anywhere else, certainly not on menus.

Mead is too hard to find in Chicago right now because it is in too much demand. Just wait until January 2014, then look for it in Indianapolis and Wichita, Kansas, where all of Chicago's unwanted because unfaddish mead will be shipped in late December, to be replaced with beer and/or cider.

Lots of lols on this thread, but I think this one got me the most. :D

Also, I guess I was wrong about the scope of the trend. It is not a ramen burger, but using all sorts of stupid and unmanageable food items to replace a hamburger bun: http://www.chicagoreader.com/Bleader/ar ... a-pasadita
